Hold on folks, busy weekend here but lemme check real quick...
EDIT: KNOX COUNTER 0x0
How does one check the Knox counter? Since you are rooted the "lock" is sbnown as unlocked.
You can check the Knox counter in Download or Odin mode.
Volume Down+Home+Power and then Volume Up. I'm not sure how to get OUT of that except with a battery pull, but you do get the Knox counter in that mode.
Question: I'm "thinking" of going back to the note 3, but the real issue was that I lost unlimited in so doing. They would give me 6 gb/mo., which isn't too bad. I'm thinking about it.
So, here's my question: this knox thingypoo. Do you think the note 3 will ever be able to get custom roms? They would be very important to me.
Recall that the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon came out with a hopelessly locked bootloader. It wasn't long before the bootloader was cracked and we unlocked and rooted that sucker.
The Note 3 was out a mere THREE DAYS and got root. There is no doubt in my mind that the bootloader will be opened on it. HOWEVER:
The Knox counter will be a one-way ticket, IMO. It can't be reset except by Samsung; so once you install a custom ROM (when that happens, not if) it will overwrite the Knox folder and trip the counter. I'm not a developer, but I see no way around that: if you decide to ROM this phone, I hope you never need warranty work on it.
As a matter of curiosity, I have to ask: what is it about the Note 3's functionality do you NOT like? I mean, the S-pen functions well... I'm just wondering what it is about it that would make you prefer more of the same stuff we've done for so long with the Galaxy Nexus
Now if a ROM were developed that kept the S-pen functionality and opened up all the options that a ROM like, say, Sourcery had in it... then I see your position right away. But right now Gina (that's my Note 3's name) is working just about the way I want her to...
What you said Chief... Those are my personal questions for myself right now. Honestly can't find any cons anymore except the future Roms..
I still love my GNex but it's time for something new.
Since your root experience.. I guess we don't need to wait for the rumored Developers version.. Looks like I am making that purchase this weekend! Thanks for updating and being the guinea pig Chief!
I loved trying roms on my tbolt.. In fact i still use it as a wifi device and it flies with a gingerbread aosp rom. With stock ice cream sandwich rom the phone is unusable. Slow beyond all belief. THAT was a device that needed an unlocked bootloader. I never bothered unlocking my maxx hd because it worked fine and I couldn't think of a feature that it lacked that was worth the trouble. Now I'm not familiar with Note 2 roms so maybe some make it worth it but my Note 3 is fine. I really can't think of a feature it lacks and it doesn't lag. I actually like some of the stupid Sammy features like cloning my tv picture so I can run around the house and never miss a play. S pen is growing on me though I never that I'd use it. I'm not used to the size yet but it is fantastic watching tv or movies. What would rooting and romming give me that I don't have (other than the sheer fun of it).
What would rooting give you? Well duh. It would allow those Subway Surfer high scores and powerups to be moved from one device to another, seriously why else would anyone root!?!?
I didn't like losing unlimted for one.
I didn't lose mine. Just paid $699 for my phone. Sell it any time I like and buy a new one any time I like. Hell, if I could add another unlimited line I'd buy a g2 as well. My friends spend a LOT more on watches than I spend on phones. It's my hobby and although some of my relatives think I'm an idiot for changing phones all the time they buy 80,000 dollar cars and remodel and refurnish without blinking an eye. I don't find a fancy sink and island any more fun than a kitchen table and regular sink. I'll enjoy cruising in my lame v6 accord coup while they are served free gourmet snacks and cappuccino while waiting for technicians to fix their cars.
I don't care about knox because there is no way my I. T. Dept. would put any time into utilizing its functions.
Device Payment Plan. Pay it off in 12 months (though it is for the retail price). What I did for my G2.
Do you have any basic phones on your plan that are available for upgrade? We have 5 phones on our plan, 3 smartphones and 2 basic phones. I purchased mine from Verizonwireless.com and used one of the basic lines that was available for an upgrade. Once I got the phone in I just activated it on my line and I did not loose my unlimited data. Now on my wife's line I purchased her a new Iphone 5S (I know...please no flaming...lol, but that's what she likes) and I used her upgrade and switched her from unlimited data to the Verizon Max 6 GB data plan for the same $30.00 a month. She, at most, might use .5 Gb's per month, so no danger of her going over.
When you're in the dial pad screen, hit the menu button. Under there should be an option for key pad tones. Uncheck it.
I plan on getting the Note 3 in November and one of the big reasons I want to root it is to hopefully get the email/gmail etc inverted. It is so much easier on my poor old eyes! Of course it might not be as much of an issue on the larger screen as it is on my GNex. I see fine on my laptop without that. Hmmm.
I did that, I was just hoping to find those reassuring old touch tones like a regular phone has instead of either drip drip drip or silence... I know, I'm so demanding
Well, how will rooting do that for you, Koki? Inverted Gapps would have to be flashed in recovery: there is no custom recovery (yet). I would love some inverted love as well, trust me: but the last thing I want to do is trip that counter. Why, I have no idea... I don't use Knox, heck, I can't even FIND Knox but if I could I wouldn't use it. Too volatile. I guess I just don't like that whole "one way" scenario where you can never go completely back to stock if needed.
Rocket Dialer has touch tones
I'm patient. I hope for the custom recovery option soon. Lots of really smart folks working on it I'm sure. I'm not even going to pretend I know anything about how it all works. Just what I want. And I know I might have to compromise on some things. That's OK too. It's all good.
So, as long as you don't trip the good ole Knox counter...is your phone still covered by warranty? Or does rooting it void your warranty regardless? I'm just curious...if rooting voids your warranty anyway, then what does it matter if you trip the counter?
Honestly, I don't know...thus the reason I am asking
You can always UNROOT the phone for warranty work if needed... but you CAN'T reset the Knox counter. So NOT tripping it during the process is of utmost importance to many early adopters like us
Question for all of us rooted Note III ers.. What about 4.4...are you comfortable with root now, and waiting to see what happens when 4.4 is out?
I am sure the Devs are working hard on the bootloader, but...
I have every expectation that 4.4 will break root. So we need to enjoy it while we can.
EDIT: If you haven't read the root guide update, I threw THIS in there. Big honkin' important note!
de la Vega only works on MI9, not MJ7. MJ7, you need to use Kingo Root. If your pc doesn't allow you to do it then switch pc's. My Laptop said "FAILED" but when I switched to my Desktop it worked fine.
Mine too! Kingo must really not like laptops
If you plan on still being able to use safestrap you wont be able to take 4.4 update until they figure out how to get it work with SELinux Enforcing otherwise you will just have root at best but no recovery
