AUGH! You beat me to it!

Downloading now, I'll be making backups and CLEAN flashing this baby today!

Remember you'll need Safestrap KitKat 3.72 and BusyBox to make this happen...

    BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP!

I was stalking XDA everyday, just hoping to see it. Been running it since last night, still tweeking everything, but so far it's just as awesome as his JB version. :D

why is busybox needed? Just get it from the play store or you need something else?

Where do I find Safestrap KitKat 3.72?

Busybox is required for some reason I can't explain. Get it in Play. TNT, it's at XDA :)

EDIT: And I'm stuck. BIG TIME.

I went to the Stock Slot, installed Busybox, installed Safestrap 3.72, installed Recovery (says installed, not active - which is normal until the ROM Slot has something in it). But no matter what I try or how I try it, I am thoroughly unable to reach the recovery screen! I have rebooted the phone well over a dozen times and it's not plugged in.

It gives me the Custom Samsung boot screen, then a quick flash and haptic like it TRIED to load Recovery... but didn't. Then it goes back to the boot screen and loads the stock ROM as usual.

I'm running out of ideas here, and if any of you guys have magically gotten past this point, I would be grateful for your help. What have I missed? :(

Time is of the essence here, since I have an appointment in 2 hours and really need my ROM.

Do I have to be on KitKat to get this latest ROM update?

No, but there are some SERIOUS caveats to installing it.

According to my drama (detailed at XDA), Safestrap 3.72 (a) requires Busybox to run; and (b) only the STOCK slot works right now.

I am stuck back at ROOTING the phone! Yep, I somehow bricked Gina and Odin'd all the way back to MJE stock. Now trying repeatedly to root with Kingo on the desktop. I have to take care of sick wife tonight so I'll start again in the morning. I truly hope and pray I can get this phone rooted so I can proceed with getting KitKat Hyperdrive on my phone!

While I'm a dedicated AF guy, XDA does have a great concentration of experts who are working feverishly to help me get back on track (nothing personal, folks). If you want to follow the drama, it starts on Page 113 of the Safestrap 3.72 thread.

    Chief,

Sorry to hear about all your troubles. I never could get Kingo to work...had to use VRoot to even root. Then I never could get SafeStrap 3.72 to install either...so I finally just installed 3.65 and found Hyperdrive RSL7 (4.3) and installed it. So, now I am a happy camper...and no way will I try SafeStrap 3.72 and Hyperdrive RSL8 (4.4) until the problems are fixed for a while.

Chief, i went back to MJE last night and rooted with vroot.

I FINALLY got rooted last night! Kingo kept telling me root failed... but I finally used Root Checker and it said "Congratulations! You have root access".

And here are the specific steps:

    1. Odin your phone to MJE
    2. ROOT
    3. Install Safestrap 3.65 (NOT 3.72)
    4. Open Safestrap and install recovery (Make Sure to check 'unknown sources' in security settings).
    5. Boot into Safestrap and do a full wipe.
    6. Install deodexed NC2 on STOCK slot only, NO other slots are supported at this time
    7. After this, reboot DIRECTLY into download mode from Safestrap (hit back twice, select Download)
    8. In download mode, odin the KK firmware.
    9. Reboot, and setup phone
    10. Install Safestrap 3.72,then open app and hit install recovery.

I was interested in HD8, but as I read what you went through and my confidence to follow through is not there, I think I will wait for safe strap and HD8 to have some kinks worked out. just reading your ten steps, I ended up with having like 20 questions. so I think I'll take a deep breath and troll this thread for awhile.

Believe me it is actually a very simple process to do, took me like 5 min.

I'm surprised to hear about the issues people are having. I've been on the stock slot since HD6. It went smooth as any other flash/recovery that I've done. Hope everyone gets their issues ironed out.

    Chief and MrClean,

If you guys are running RSL8 in the stock slot, did you install your stock ROM into another slot...i.e. like slot 1 or 2? Or did you just make a nandroid backup and install RSL8 to your stock slot?

And wow! It does sound a little more involved moving to RSL8 right now...think I will wait as well. Don't have the nerves to go through all that now...getting to old :)

    Chief,

Can you throw a link in there to that thread so we can find it easily?

You HAVE to install Hyperdrive in the STOCK SLOT. It's the only slot supported by Safestrap 3.72 KitKat beta. Make sure that you flash BusyBox in 3.72 BEFORE re-writing Recovery.

My odyssey was a comedy of errors, really. I was accustomed to just ROMming as usual... but there is a very precise sequence of events for this. Read on starting on Page 113 here:

Also: though I posted in another thread, I'll mention it here too because it's important...

Do NOT EVER Reboot to Recovery in Hyperdrive's Power Menu! Reboot normally, then select Recovery in Safestrap. If you try to reboot Recovery in Hyperdrive, you will likely find yourself in a perpetual bootloop from which escape is almost impossible, even with a battery pull. You're warned!

Come full circle, back to this thread. When I went from HD6 to HD7. I didnt change slot 0, or the version of safestrap (i've got v3.71). I just deleted slot1 (HD6) recreated slot1, and installed HD7 from the SD card into slot 1.

I've heard odin all over this forum and xda, but never had it, used it, or know what its for. I see Chief you saying you went back to MJE. Jumping into recovery.. etc etc. Instally busybox (is this do already if kingo+SS+HD7 was used?) I"m not a ROMing expert. that all went over me head. Can you dump it down for me? here or in a PM if it clouding up the forum.

In a perfect world I would leave STock in slot0 and put HD8 in slot1. I see Mr.Clean just gave up that notion and used HD8 in slot0. If i needed to go back to vzw.. I guess some tool (odin) could be used to put stock back on. but that's not need for me. I just want to know how I can get to HD8.

    Thanks for the help ...

As of the new Safestrap, version 3.72, you cannot use the ROM slots yet. All new custom ROMs need to be put in the Stock slot.

Hi Chief, if you have a moment can you confirm my thinking below

I currently rooted via kingo, using safestrap v3.71, with HD7 in slot1, and stock vzw 4.3 MJE.

Given that I think I can step with step5. Within safestrap the "full swipe" you refer to is within the wipe options, then "swipe to factory reset"? or do you choose options in the "advanced wipe" or format data? at this point the microSD card is still installed correct?

step 7. to reboot, simple power cycle? or use the reset in odin?
saftestrap setup I can handle their website has tips on how to put v3.72 if you had prior version.

where does HD8 come into play? or is that the deodexed stuff from above? thanks for that help..

step 6. where do I get a deodexed NC2 (not sure what that is). Do I "install" from within safestrap? Looked at xda dev. and found a thread that has a Odex Rom, De-odex rom, and firmware. dont know what odex versus de-odex means. but I am guessing I want just the firmware? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726558 there are 8 steps instructions there. Maybe I just follow those, those not sure where HD8 into slot zero comes into play. Man am I daft. It seems simpler when it was just a different slot

step 7. I can get to download mode. I've recently installed odin v3.09. Started it up, N3 is connected as MTP. but its foreign to me. I see ID:0/006 was added.

Full wipe is in the advanced button, where you can wipe Dalvik Cache, system, cache, data, etc. Yes the micro SD is still installed

Safestrap has an option to Reboot into Download mode, and it works.

HD8 comes into play when you want to upgrade to the next version of the ROM. This can be done by installing it and updating it via the firmware & bootloader update flashed via odin. Also here is the difference between deodex and odex: What do “Odex” and “Deodex” mean? The All Inclusive Explanation | TalkAndroid.com

The firmware is a must on any ROM that you decide to put onto your device that is considered 4.4.2. For it to run properly this needs to be flashed onto your device.

Yes that's good, that means your device is connected via odin. The next thing you do is click on the AP box and put the firmware update in there and let it confirm, check the box, then 'start'

If you keep looking around the internet, you'll almost always find what you need. Found this link. I think this confirms the steps I've been piecing together in differing posts.
*** How To Update From JB 4.3 To KK 4.4.2 On Verizon RETAIL NOTE 3 *** - xda-developers

Its got links to stock ROM (both odex and deodex) and the firmware. I dont think I need to stock ROM, since I want HyperDrive 8. I think I can follow these step by step, but instead of stock ROM or Baja, or Jasmine, I use HD8 early on.

one thing missing that was listed in safestrap, was that the recommeded using the uninstall recovery option with the pre v3.72 version before installing v3.72. I think that I will do that.

Lastly. someone got a link or a youtube link to how to make a nice full nanodroid backup that in case things go wrong, somehow I can use Odin to get back to my clean slate? I think I would like to do that right now even, but dont know how.
