So....My Droid 1 failed within it's one year warranty. Went through quite a hassle with Verizon trying to get it replaced. They kept telling me a new one would be here by "Tuesday", no phone, call again, should be here by "Friday", no phone...OK, now i'm frustrated. Finally on Monday, a box from Verizon, and surprise, it's a new Droid 2... YAY. Now on Tuesday, another delivery with a box from Verizon, with yes...another Droid 2. That was almost 3 months ago. The second Droid 2 has just sat on my desk, no charges from Verizon, no phone call or anything asking for it back.

Today, my son drops the in use Droid 2 phone and it shattered and it's not working. So, I say to myself, no problem I have a brand new one on my desk. My concern is that if I activate it, it will trigger some thing with Verizon and I will then be charged $500 bucks for the phone. What do you all think? Have I actually got a free 2nd phone, or is it just a pretty paper weight.

I would notify them cuz ya see, vzw may slip up sometimes but they surely will find there mistakes if they make them. Knowing how money greedy vzw is, once they find out they sent a second 2nd d2 and you didn't let them know, they'll make you pay full frickin retail dude.

VZW is known to run inventory audits after-the-fact and do charge customers full retail (up to $500 sometimes) when they receive multiple units or when they don't return the defective units on time.

You really should go into the VZW store and explain to them the situation. As for your son dropping the D2 and shattering, that's tough luck, must have been a decent drop. If you have the VZW insurance on it (Depending on which) you might just have them activate that second unit at no cost or by paying the dreaded deductible.

Personally, I smell a slight mess. Chances are UPS or however it was shipped paid insurance to Verizon for the "lost" phone. If I were you, I would either sell the phone to wash your hands of it or just keep it as a paper weight.

Sell the phone? That's an irresponsible suggestion. The cleanest thing would be to turn it in, period.

I will go down to the Verizon store and see my guy there. I know him pretty well after going there for the last several years...see what he says.

And be accused of fraud? No thanks. Then the questions of "why didnt you turn it in 6 months ago?" will come up.
Then again I am a very honest person. I would have turned it in immediately. I am not judging the posters character at all...just saying what I would have done.
However, given the situation if something made me decide to keep the 2nd phone, I would NEVER mention it to Verizon. Risk possibly losing my contract with Verizon? Have to pay back UPS or FedEx? How do you know how UPS or FedEx with react? In their eyes the person committed FRAUD. That is a crime.

If you know someone well enough to talk one on one..maybe privately..I say go for it. See how he can help you..
If not, I would bury this.

I am surprised this hasn't been locked. I understand the OP's tough situation with a broken phone but it can still turn sour even months later. When McDonalds' accidentally gives you an extra dollar double cheeseburger that's one thing. When you receive an extra $500 device that's a little different.
