So I have until October of 2011 until my 'New every 2' comes up again. I was supposed to get a droid through my previous company, however I quit cause they werent paying haha.

Anyway, my current phone (LG Versa) has started to act up. Randomly shutting off even on full charges as well as dialing people when I'm not holding the phone. I took it to verizon and they simply ran a software update which hasn't changed much. Since my phone is a year old, it is no longer under warranty. The insurance either ran out or doesnt cover it (Not the primary account holder so I cant check)

So if I want to buy a new phone, I have to pay full retail. As far as I can tell the cheapest is $140 on the verizon site, while android phones are nearing $600. I've also seen some of those Wirefly deals, but I doubt theyd work for my situation.

TL;DR: Phones broken, I'd like a new one and if I could somehow get a droid thatd be a sweet bonus.

This query will likely get you more responses if it's in the Verizon forums, shnoobles. I've moved it for you. ;)

I've seen people on various forums saying that if you talk nicely to the customer service reps (CSRs) and get lucky, you can get your upgrade pushed forward *if* you are upgrading to a smart phone. I've seen some that have said they've had success doing this with a year and a half to go before their NE2 comes up again.

Though, I've heard mention that this only works if you do it in 2010. Good luck!

Yeah I've heard that too. Guess I have to keep trying until I find a nice CSR. I've also heard the 2010 thing, but I'm hoping I can get around that :p

Stinks that even though I want to give more money to verizon (data plan) I'd have to pay full retail for a smart phone.

I believe Verizon has a thing where they charge you $50 to replace your current phone with the same refurb model, but your phone has to act up in front of the VZ tech so they can see it

Verizon doesn't do the $50 thing any more, instead, they'd sell you a certified pre-owned phone, you would need to call customer service for prices. Getting a Certified Pre-Owned phone does not extend your contract, and the phone would be under warranty for a year. You can get info here Certified Pre-Owned Replacement Program and a list of available phones is through a link at the bottom of that page.

If your phone is out of warranty, and you don't have an upgrade until 10/11, that means you let someone else on your plan take your upgrade this past February. So, the question is, who else on your plan has an upgrade coming soon?

The 2010 thing was relevant to if your contract ends in 2010, you could upgrade early to a smartphone. Your contract doesn't end until 2/12. If there is a tale about someone that got their upgrade date moved a full year and a half, there had to be some serious extenuating circumstances. No rep is able to do that just to be nice.

So, your best bet is to take someone else's line's upgrade from your plan, another option, if you don't have five lines yet, is to add a line to your family plan, then you're only paying $10/month extra, and you can either not use it, or put an old phone on there and let someone use it. Otherwise, you can pay full retail price... or check in this forum's classified section, you should be able to pick up a relatively new phone there and save $100 or so off of full retail.

You could always look into a preowned Android phone...this is a cheaper route than buying one new off contract. It'll tie you over until your NE2 date, at which point you can get a top of the line phone at the subsidized price :)

Verizon also has an option where you can upgrade annually, but your contract will be extended another two years as well. (Your new contract would expire in Oct 2013.)

"You can get a new phone every year with Annual Upgrade. Sign up for a 2-year agreement on a calling plan of at least $49.99 and you can purchase a new phone at its promotional price through My Verizon every year with a 2-year renewal (upgrade fee may apply)." - From the Verizon web site

To see for yourself go to this link and look under "My Verizon and the Verizon Advantage." It's the third heading down on the page.
