The responsiveness of the buttons is fine, but they seem to barely light up at all, and when they light up, you can see several dots. It is not a big deal, but it really takes away from the appearance of the phone.

Is this a problem you have experienced, or should I try to get a replacement?

Not to thread jack, but is there a way to make those lights stay on longer?

Go into your display settings and scroll down to screen timeout.. I think if you have power saving checked it shuts it off quick as well

No matter what settings you have they only have a 3 second burn. There are no settings or fixes to make them stay on longer or be brighter.

To be honest I prefer the dim look. One of the complaints of the vibrant variant of the Galaxy S is the lights are bright but the short turn-off timer makes it hard really distracting.

My main problem is with the dots on the buttons, not really the brightness. It doesn't make a difference in function, but it is distracting and takes away from the appearance.

    Has anybody else noticed this?

It's faux carbon fiber look on the buttons.

Carbon fiber doesn't ever look like dots

Maybe someone will make a screen protector with them printed on.

The weak lighting is a feature as far as I'm concerned. The Vibrant has eyeball searing brightness and is annoying. I like the buttons with the subtle lighting.

Here's hoping for a custom rom that can change the button light timeout and utilize the button light that works as a notification (like LED notification light). Maybe make it pulsate when there is a missed call, incoming mail, SMS, etc....

My 2 cents: for someone with poor eyesight, this is especially troubling. The light of the button turns on only when you press the button? What's the point of that? The issue being that I don't know what the 4 buttons are yet, and although I'll memorize them soon enough, I will forever be annoyed that the button only lights up after I press the button, when I no longer need the light of the button I want because my finger is covering that light!

This phone is such a piece of crap, I am SO disappointed in Samsung!

The buttons light up any time you touch the screen...not just when you touch the bottom buttons.

I know... what's your point? I need see what the buttons are before I hit them, and usually I need to hit something down there before I hit something on the main screen...(?)

The only problem I have with the buttons on the bottom is that I find it that I have to press the buttons more than once for them to register. It doesn't happen all the time but it does happen. Anyone else experience this?

Saying this phone is a piece of crap, I think, is going a bit overboard but to each their own. :D

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be snarky. Your post said "The light of the button turns on only when you press the button?" I thought you didn't realize that you could turn them on by pressing anywhere on the screen. Just trying to be helpful.

I had the same weak lighting on the bottom buttons. I also had a problem where the bottom buttons were unresponsive or would fire off randomly. I took the phone back and on the new one, the bottom buttons are MUCH brighter.

Seriously people, there's 4 friggin' buttons down there. It's not hard to memorize what they are and their locations. Do you really need a torch down there to press them?

They don't need to be brighter, but they do need to stay on while the screen is on.

I remember the order for the most part most of the time, but considering the surface is just smooth glass, seeing the button light up also helps with "targeting" the button press to the center of it. Otherwise, you're aiming blindly and they're quite sensitive... if you're a little off, the press doesn't register.

I use many phones on a regular basis; Evo, Moto Droid, Blackberry, Hero, Backflip, LG Ally, iPhone, to name a few so it's hard to always remember that on this phone the button layout is different so it is confusing. I would love to be able to set them to stay on with the screen.
