It's already March 26th, 2011, and Viber for Android was promised in March! Anyone know when it'll come?

Yes, Viber for Android is delayed more than expected, but as you know, technological developments tend to be delayed due to unexpected obstacles. We, as a company that cares about users

Viber 2.0 was available for download yesterday, but due to a technical issues some of our users encountered, we decided to pull back that version, thus making Viber unavailable temporarily on AppStore.

We fixed the problem and submitted the fixed version of Viber 2.0 to Apple, and it should appear in AppStore soon.
Once it's available, download it and the problem will be fixed.

Don't worry - the beta is ready. TechCrunch simply got an exclusive 500 subscriptions from us.

The emails we promised will start being sent out today, groups-by-groups. You will soon received an email, in your turn, and get the link to the application. First-signed first-get.

What is it? Even the link you provided fails to tell what it is.

Sure! I'm going to install a non-market app with no explanation of what it purportedly does!
    It is a Skype competitor.

    Thanks, but no.

I don't reply too often but this is unbelievable.
No information but a link to download an app?
If it's not spam the creator should have provided some info.
    not touching this!

What's the catch? How can you pay your bills and pay your people when the service is free and there is no advertising? How are you going to 'monetize" Viber? I don't want to get suckered by a tease only to be charged or advertised-to later.

    1. Regarding the inability to complete the installation - the only way to activate your Beta version is to wait for our invitation email. The order of sending the emails is first-subscribe first-get. There is a queue of a few tens of thousands of users (!) so please be patient - you will get the invitation email eventually and be able to complete the installation.

    2. Viber is completely free.
For now, Viber's focus is on adding platforms, adding features (such as text messages) and improving overall system performance. At the same time, we are working on additional future premium services that will generate revenues. The basic Viber service - Viber to Viber phone calls and text messages - will ALWAYS be free.

    Further, I

I'd love to see it available for Android soon!
Also, to be truly Skype competitor, the app needs to be able to make video calls and also be able to make phone calls from PC...

Hunted it down ok, installed fine, put MY phone number in like it asked, pressed continue, said something about waiting for sms message, up comes an error message saying "Viber for Android is currently on Beta, to become a Beta tester please go to viber.com" ok off i go to viber site, put in my details like it asks, "The Viber Beta for Android is only available to registered users.
Please follow Viber on Facebook and twitter, and you'll be the first to know when a Beta version is available for download.

So now Viber has my details and i have nothing, perhaps the guy from viber will come on and tell me why they duped me of my details.

@Usta - Video calls in Viber and a PC/Mac version are two things we are considering to develop. Stay tuned for updates.

@jimmyr - we didn't dupe your details. Our Beta version is a closed-group project, and we can't instantly allow all subscribers (we have tens of thousands) to immediately start using the Beta. When we launched the Beta, we officially announced that there is an order to which users will receive the application - first-sign first-get.

So what you need to do now, like all other subscribers, is wait until you receive the invitation email from us. Only then will you be able to complete the setup and use Viber on your Android.

    Hey ViberMedia,

Thanks for dropping by the forums to answer people's questions.

I do have one question and I'd like to get your angle on it:

Why is Viber superior to Skype right now? I'm sure after Beta, you probably have big plans for future development but I'd like to hear your arguments for Viber's superiority in the short-term.

I've heard good things about Viber but I'm not entirely sure if I see huge benefits of it over Skype or vice versa at this point. The bulk of people I know don't necessarily have smartphones that I can actually call them over Wifi and for those that do, I'm not necessarily going to run a one-man marketing campaign for them to get Viber or any other app.

For the moment, I'm stuck in a long-term contract with a relatively decent amount of minutes so calling people nationally is not really an issue. The main reason I use Skype at the moment is for calling people abroad (my minute don't allow international calls) and that it has the benefit of being able to call both their phone and their PC which I believe Viber doesn't do. Skype obviously also has the benefit of being a much more established medium though as is the case with many propietary and closed source companies, that isn't always a good thing.

I hope you can reply when you get a chance. That being said, I'm going to sign up as a Beta tester anyway :p

    Hi @BOZG

Thanks for your comments and questions.

Look, we wouldn't want to compare Viber to any other specific app, but I'd like to note 3 of Viber's biggest advantages:

    1. Viber's interface is very easy to use - it looks completely similar to the iPhone basic application, and this makes a huge difference for most users in the world. Simple elegance is what works.
    2. Viber does not require login/password in order to log in, unlike the great majority of VoIP applications today, but instead it uses the user's original cellular phone number. This makes the registration process very quick, and helps users find other friends who have Viber very easily. This way more and more friends recommend each other to install Viber, and have free calls and texts.
    3. Finally, Viber doesn't have to be open when receiving a call, thanks to Viber's support of Push Notifications feature. This means that Viber saves battery, and that users are always available to receive Viber's free calls.

Lastly - we believe that the service itself that Viber provides, in terms of call quality, functionality, etc., is a very reliable one, and users appreciate that and choose to install and use it on a daily basis all around the world (it's popular both domestic and international).

Sure, Viber still doesn't contain all the feature we'd like to see, but you have to remember that the app is still very young. It's constantly improving, and we guarantee you that with each and every version, new features (big or small) will be added.

    Patience is needed :)
