Has anyone noticed how the video quality such as on you tube is really bad compared to the I-phone even though the Desire's supposed to have more higher resolution? My bro's got the I-phone and I tested the desire with his phone. Went into certain you tube videos, using same wi-fi connection in same room etc etc and also tried using 3G (both on t-mob) and still his video quality on I-phone was miles better and clearer!

    any suggestions anyone?:(

Quality was ok, but using the Youtube app, took forever to load, much longer than on my iPhone...Video stored on the phone plays fine though.

Or you could, I don't know, access the menu and change the play quality to high-quality vids. Rocket science.

My HTC Desire video isn't the best quality. It looks brilliant and vibrant looking back at videos on the device, but when transferred to my PC the colours on the playback were very washed out and fairly bland. Damn UK weather at the moment, need some good sunshine and see how good the video is then, outside.

Wrong. Default is HQ only if you're on wi-fi. On EDGE/3G, it defaults to low-quality.

    And as the OP said:

So it would have been on HQ.

Just looked at the video options on my Desire

    WVGA (800X480)
VGA (640X480) this one was set as default, but have knocked it up to (800X480)
    CIF (352X288)
    QVGA (320X240)

I took some video outside, but think you need bright sunshine to get the best results, as the colours were fairly washed and greyish, playing it back on my PC. I'm going to experiment with the colour adjustments now, as they were default 50%......fingers crossed.

    EDIT
Yep, that worked fine! I think you need to adjust the colour saturation levels as the playback was bland and grey. After adjusting the colour levels, all was fine, so you all need to do this otherwise you'll have crappy dull, colourless videos.

I think some might be confusing the phones video capture play back and settings with internet video play quality such as you tube etc.

Is there a way of changing the settings for how you tube and other internet vids can be played back at higher quality.. as the I-phone's internet video are much better qaulity

Care to post a side-by-side screenshot comparison of the same youtube video played on the iPhone and your Desire?

I am also getting the same problem.

Had an iPhone up until a few days ago and video on the Desire seems to be of worse quality on youtube. Seems to be very blocky to start then get better over time. Its the same over WiFi or 3G.
My iPhone could handle video over 3G and WiFi fine.
Also noticing video is slightly out of sync at the start then seems to gradually catch up.
I am talking slight here, not one or 2 seconds but enough to notice.
Then I don't know if its just me getting used to it but it seems to correct itself without any pause to video or sound.

Definitely noticeable compared to using the iPhone for the last 7 months.

There was a firmware update this morning from HTC but this doesn't seem to have improved the video at all.
Not sure what the update was for either.

Anyone have a solution or idea why the video is worse on the Desire.

Anyone from HTC themselves with an answer?

    This is not just youtube.

Just tried BBC iPlayer and its exactly the same issues there.

I am currently using my works WiFi which is just 2Mb but I have also used my home 20Mb connection and still the same problem.

Again all these factors were the same when using the iPhone and is much clearer and without sync issues.

Mine is set to HQ as its either WiFi or 3G/HSDPA most of the time.

I just used Task Killer and stopped a few tasks that were in the background.

    Seemed to help slightly.

But the major one for me now is the BBC iPlayer through beebplayer.

    Quality is absolutely rubbish.

I found the video quality on Youtube was pretty bad when I went on the site through the internet browser. However when I use the Youtube app from the phone's menu, the quality is much better.
Perhaps the quality was set to low on the browser, I didn't check.

I found the opposite for some reason. Video through the app was poor, but through the browser was much better than on an iPhone.

Low resolution content will probably look worse because the screen is higher resolution and stretching always ruins the image (same reason standard TV looks worse on a HDTV).

If you see the file sizes of the programs, they are like a 10th of the actual program on PC. I'm sure its been squashed down for a quicker download with a reduction on quality.

Possibly something like this. I would guess that those vids that don't have a higher quaility version may be quite bad, but certainly ones with a HQ version are perfect (for me at least)

Only on 3G, but you can override this by pressing menu and selecting HQ

    Yeah, didn't notice that before.

I guess we will have to wait for an official Android App unless someone else has a better I'dea.

Has anyone got any tips on what task manager to use?
I have Advanced Task Killer and Manager.
I seem to get different results in each one.
I have noticed the Maps App is showing multiple times.
    Anyone know why?

The official android app is called youtube and its on your phone!

The task killers show different items because of the way they were developed. Task killer is a good one, but I stopped using this due to some inconsistencies it caused. Currently I am using TaskPanel. I prefer this one on my desire because it hides some of the more important and key services, making my phone a lot more stable.
Task killers generally show apps and services, so one of the maps entries may be a service (widget for example)
