I have a Virgin Mobile branded HTC Desire with a Virgin Mobile SIM card. The handset was purchased outright. The contract is a rolling 30-day contract so I can cancel at any time.

I'd like to move to O2 purely for the coverage. How do I go about debranding the handset and (I presume) unlocking it so that I can use an O2 SIM card in it?

Debranding was actually a pretty simple process, the guide I used to debrand mind can be found here.

You will have to unlock the phone too I would imagine. See if you can get Virgin to do it for you for free first though, most providers will provide the code then and there. If not there are plenty of website offering unlock codes via email but you will have to pay a small fee.

Thanks for that. That's quite an old guide. Is there a newer one around or is that one still the one to use?

Actually I think you're right. I didn't use that method at all... sorry.

Check this out instead, makes things much easier. :)

1st post, I just got my HTC Desire from Virgin and tried my O2 sim in it before my number was swapped over and it worked fine. I'm guessing that they are not locked.

Why not borrow a friends sim and try it first?
