Root [Virgin Mobile] [VIRGINMOBILE][GUIDE][BASIC][WIP] Rooting for Newbies!

I like how since I have installed the samsung driver, every time I plug my phone in it has to re-download and reinstall the drivers for it. Fantastic work as usual Samsung.

It shouldn't have to do that. And if you don't know what supersu and busybox are why are you rooting? Supersu manages root permission granted to apps.

Not yet.....but soon if you have a custom anything dont update it won't work. But if you do want to update you must return phone to stock(stock recovery, rom with absolutly no mods) then you can update but will lose root. You would have to wait for someone to find a way to root the update

You should still be able to root after updating. Just return to stock everything, update, then reroot.

Not if they patched the exploit that allowed you to root on the prevous update. Havent heard anyone who has updated and if they lost root or not. I may return to stock and update today, i only use root for adaway,sd maid, and explorer for now so not much will be lost on my end if i lose root

Nevermind i missed the flashable zip for the update and how to reroot.

when I try and start my phone with the volume pushed down and the power button pushed in, in the corner of the screen it already says ODIN MODE(in red) and under that Product Name: SPH-L300
Custom Binary Download: Yes (2 counts)
Current Binary : Custom
System Status: Custom and under this in shaded letters it says
Qualcomm Secureboot: enable
the android robot saying "downloading"
I have two of these phones and they both do the same thing even thought one of them is brand new out of the box. HELP

Its supposed to do that. Its download mode.(Odin mode) that's why your using Odin. Custom binary 2 means they have been rooted before. What is it you need help with? So far its all normal.
And towelroot does work. Your antivirus is over reacting. Its an exploit.

Ok, even though this brand new phone came out of the box, somehow having being rooted before I got it (?) and I didn't buy it refurbished, I left it with the little android guy saying "downloading" "do not turn off target" for over an hour, and could not do anything else to the phone until I pulled out the battery. I'm clearly not any kind of a computer geek, but I'm not daft either, the only reason I wish to root these phones is to get rid of that damn CRAP that Virgin and Samsung are forcing on me so I can use that space for something useful, like some more Casino's,LOL. As for Towelroot, I bypassed the McAfee and when I tried to get the apk all I could get on my phones was like a sideways barber poll that spun on forever with no apk coming. Please get me by that Downloading Guy. Thanks In Advance. TED

Open Odin on your PC. Plug your phone into PC while its in download mode and install twrp. This is in the first post in this thread. You did read it? Sounds like you're on step 6

ROOTING FOR NEWBIES!

UPDATE (7/28/2014):

Before continuing with this guide, please be aware there is a much simpler method for rooting as suggested by the_Victorian at this post http://androidforums.com/virgin-mob...-basic-wip-rooting-newbies-6.html#post6624466 and is quotes as follows:

First off, thanks to xInterlopeRx who is a part of [OUDHS] (Official Unloved Devices Hit Squad) which brought us ports such as the TWRP and CWM recoveries which will be used to root this phone. Expect brilliant future development from this team! Be sure and give a thanks to them!

If you just bought the phone you are probably on Android OS 4.1.2
If you are still on Ice Cream Sandwich (Android OS 4.0) this guide will still work for you, but you might want to upgrade to Jellybean using the "Update Firmware" option in System Updates found in your settings menu before you root.

Make sure you have the Samsung USB drivers installed on your computer.
You may find those here: Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.5.14.0.exe

First thing you'll need to root this phone is a custom recovery. You will need to download that here: TWRP.2.4.3.0.tar

Now, you're gonna want to save these two files (you will flash them with your custom recovery after it's installed) and place them on your sd card:
busybox_v1.20.2-CWM+.zip
SuperSU-v1.80.zip

If you don't have Odin installed on your computer, do that now. You can find Odin here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2133496

You have downloaded and installed Odin and Samsung USB drivers listed above? You've downloaded the TWRP .tar file to your computer and you've place the SuperSU and Busybox zip files on your SD card? Okay, great!

Now, let's flash the custom recovery, which will be TWRP, on your device! And let's root this thing!

1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE

2. On your PC, launch the ODIN.exe file you unzipped from the prerequisites.
3. On ODIN, click the PDA section and select the TWRP .tar you downloaded from the link above. Uncheck Auto Reboot! Make sure NO partition options are checked!

4. Place phone in download mode by pressing Volume Down + Power. Hold until confirmation screen appears. Confirm by pressing Volume +.
5. Connect your phone to the PC via USB cable
6. Check ODIN. A small box on the upper left should turn blue and the dialog box must display "Added!!"
7. Select "Start" and wait for it to finish. After it is complete, Odin will say PASS! After you see this, disconnect the USB cable from your phone and pull your battery out of your phone.
8. Place the battery back in. While holding the VOLUME UP button, press the power and hold it until you see the green text that says "Booting into recovery". As soon as you see this green text let go of all the buttons!
9. Click on Install in your custom recovery (TWRP) and navigate to where you placed the two files listed earlier which will be the Busybox and SuperSU zip. You will want to install both of those. Assuming it is successful, you will then want to select Reboot System from your TWRP menu.
10. You should now be rooted! I assume you are familiar with what rooting does so there is no need to explain how SuperSU works. ENJOY YOUR ROOTED PHONE!

Sounds like you were stuck in Odin mode. Were you attempting to flash the custom recovery, or get to the custom recovery after flashing it? As for the towlroot method, try downloading it on your computer and tranfering it with a micro SD card. Just use any file manager to find and install it.

Guys for a much simpler root, just use www.towelroot.com. step 1: Download apk. Step 2: run apk step 3: get superSU from google play, CONGRATS YOU ARE ROOTED!!!!

-the_Victorian

Tried downloading apk and it gives me an error "unable to download" any advice? How long does it normally take cause I have to wait like half an hour just to get an error message

I have same question
Anybody help?

To unroot, there is an option in supersu to remove root. You can't just remove twrp. You have to re install your stock recovery. Hopefully you backed up your stock recovery.img. If you're on mg5, you can flash moonknightus's stock mg5 and when flashing, just select no to root and select stock recovery. If you're on nd4, nick_73 made an nd4 stock to flash in twrp with the same options as moon's mg5. Any other build you have to do it manually.
