Can we download the HTC Keyboard apk file from
    Here ?
I would really like to try voice input to text and email. Swype is great, but would like to have the option. I am using the leaked 2.1 OS as well.

Has anybody tried this install from XDA forums? I want to make sure I don't ruin my phone if I do.

That file is for the Nexus One. I think the main problem you will have is resolution.

Wow, Vlingo is pretty cool, it works almost flawlessly so far. Is the microphone button supposed to be on the keyboard? I do not have the microphone button, I just have to open the app vlingo to use it. Is that the way it is meant to be used.

The thread for the HTC keyboard download said it was originally made for lower resolutions and ported for the N1s higher res screen... has anyone tried it? Does it even install?

This user (I think?) says he got it working on the Eris, but I'm not quiet sure I understand what he's saying:
    xda-developers - View Single Post - [APP MOD] HTC_IME Keyboard (26th March) v19: Lowres! , Custom smileys

This post suggests it would work on the Hero, so it will probably work on our Eris:
    xda-developers - View Single Post - [APP MOD] HTC_IME Keyboard (26th March) v19: Lowres! , Custom smileys

Someone try it and post here!

Sorry for bumping an older thread, but this works on the Eris now!

    [MOD] HTC_IME (15th April) v24: Droid/Milestone/SE X10 landscape, FC on boot - xda-developers

From the link above, download the "lowres" version 24 (near the middle of the thread, where it says "Changelog"). From this zip, only install the "HTC_IME_lo.apk", don't worry about the "clicker" thing (I used ASTRO file manager). Once the install finishes, go into your keyboard settings, select HTC_IME mod.

Then go into a text input (some are finicky, I used the email reply field), long press, and a dialog should come up, tap "Input Method" then select "HTC_IME Mod" and you're good to go! There are also some other cool hacks in this (spacebar fix in URLs, custom smiley buttons, customized haptic feedback, etc...).

By default it replaces the hide keyboard button with a smiley button, but you can change it back in the settings.

Ok, what am I doing wrong?
I downloaded the lo res file for 1.6 and greater.
I unzipped it, copied and pasted to my desktop.
I plugged my Eris into my computer's USB port.
I doubled clicked the "removable drive" to open the sd card.
I copied and pasted the one file "HTC_IME_lo.apk" onto the sd card.
I safely removed the Eris from my computer.
I went to settings, language and keyboard, but could not find anything asking me to activate the "HTC_IME mod"

I am running 2.1 OTA and have already installed the voice input program from the verizon market.

You have to install the APK file... download Astro File Manager from the market (free) and use it to navigate to your SD card. Tap the "HTC_IME_lo.apk" file, tell it "Open App Manager", then tap install. Once it finishes, then you can follow the other steps for changing your input preferences.

It let me speak, and type "I'm" just fine. Maybe you have an older version of the file? I installed v25.

Swype will let you do voice to text input. Just hit menu, then the mic.

after you install the apk, you have to go to the phone settings > language and keyboard... and make sure the checkbox next to HTC_IME mod... is checked. Then you will be able to "select input method"

Did you sort out the smiley on the keyboard, 'cause I'm experiencing the same problem.
