    complaints about lag!

NO ONE is saying a peep about performance!

i've been watching the last couple days

now.. my question is, is that due to just a kickass processor? or is that with optimizations in code that came with 1.6 donut (and maybe even more w/ 2.0)?

yes, probably *both* factors contribute, but my main concern is how 2.0 is going to run on hero

cuz we don't get an upgrade to a new processor

i know we get a speed increase w/ 1.6, but 2.0 is also going to bring more code and more complexity so i half expect any improvements to be cancelled out and leave us with the same lag that we're wrestling with now

    ??

    A 550MHz OMAP3 processor destroys a 528MHz ARM11 one and even the 800MHz ARM11 in the Moment.

I think HTC skipped 1.6 so it could work more on optimizations for 2.0.

you may not see many complaints about lag on the forum but there have been complaints about lag in reviews and when i've played with the phone at the store it showed considerable lag when moving between home screens, menus, etc. When you pull down the notification bar you get the worst lag.

Honestly I think the Hero/Eris at this point in time is much snappier and smoother than the Droid. I think some of that is thanks to HTC and some of that is due to the fact that Android has been running on that Qualcomm chip for so long that it's really well-optimized for it.

With that said, I think you aren't seeing many complaints from Droid users yet because people have only had it for a couple days and I also think a lot of people realize that the Droid is powerful enough that the lag should easily be improved by software updates, so there's not point in whining about it right now.

I want to pick a new phone by the end of this month and honestly I'm torn right now. I could go with the Sprint Hero, save a ton on the plan and have a phone that is really well-done right now but nearly maxed out capability-wise. Or I could get the Droid which IMO didn't impress me much, but I think is very future-proof.

for one month, on the cheapest plan minutes-wise, and a data/internet plan, what's the price difference between sprint and verizon?

a bit off topic, but i had a pre, and that piece of crap was LAGGY. the hero is so smooth, i've had negligible lag with it. closest thing to an iphone i've played with...and im enjoying it much more.

If I want to keep the NFL app, am I able to do it with a different ROM?

Sprint: $70 a month for the Everything Data plan. 450 minutes, unlimited texts, unlimited data, unlimited Mobile to Mobile (that's ANY mobile phone, not just Sprint/Nextel)

Verizon equivalent: $70 a month for 450 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data, but no Friends and Family and no Any Mobile, Any Time. So unless you only call Verizon customers, you will eat through your minutes. To get the Friends and Family you need the 900 minute plan which is $90 a month. And Any Mobile Any Time is only a Sprint offer.

edit: Friends and Family lets you pick 5 numbers that don't get counted against your minutes.

With Verizon, you have to pay $39.99/month for 450 min, nights and weekends that start at 9:00 and unlimited verizon to verizon. You also have to pay $29.99/month for data, and if you want text messaging, it's going to run you $5-$20/month. $20 of text gets you 5000 texts but isn't unlimited (if it's even an issue at that point). You're looking at $80/month. If you have an employee discount (which I do), the discount is only taken off the $39.99 calling plan.

For me (20% off VZW and 19% off Sprint), my costs are:
    Verizon: $72 plus taxes, etc
    Sprint: $56.69 plus taxes, etc

Looking at about $20/month difference or $480 over two years.

Back to the original subject line: I just clicked on the Motorola Droid page and it seems like every other post is about a problem or complaint. Just goes to show there is no "perfect" phone because we all have different needs and levels of expectation.

    well.. i fully expect that

for one, only ppl w/ problems (and die-hard "fans" like us") are going to be posting online

two, yes there are bugs, but i'm not seeing ppl griping about lag - and that was really my point

and.. for sure, i agree - there's definitely NO "perfect" phone!

Here is my opinion of the matter. Apps on the Droid launch quickly, but the Hero isn't that far off.

Furthermore, watch some videos of the Droid. It lags switching between home screens even with no apps running.

Therefore, I actually believe that it is Sense UI that optimizes the performance of the Hero. If Sense UI ran on an ARM 8 processor, it would be quite fast and all of the animations would be smooth.

I have no lag on my Hero either. Perhaps I need to load up alot of apps and let a bunch of stuff run in the background and see if it lags then. Of course thats not a real world scenario for me so using the Hero the way I have been creates no lag. I have been extremely happy with my Hero.
I even have one of non branded early release Heros and its been tip top.
