I'm after a simple alarm app with adjustable volume.
I find the native app very loud and it shocks me awake.
Something which gets progresively louder would be ideal, also something with slightly milder alarm tones.

No, sorry karnivor88, that's not it. That's just a static volume adjustment, but all rings will still be equally loud.

What's sought after is an alarm app that goes, "ahem? Hey. Yo! FIRE!". :p

Look for Alarmed Alarm Clock in the Market. Works amazing on my Droid. You can set it to get progressively louder as you requested. Great app.

I use Audio Manager. It's great, allows you adjust the volume levels separately for everything that requires audio.

Much like the OP, I disliked being "shocked awake" by the native alarm clock application, so I went hunting for an alternative. The one I am now using is Gentle Alarm by mobitobi. There's a trial version available that is fully functional except for the fact that the alarms do not go off on Wednesdays. After checking that out, I decided it was worth the couple of bucks (or 1.59 Euros) for the full version. I've been very happy with this app. I'll post the link for the app website below.
