You WILL brick your phone. I've seen many threads about people bricking their phone.

    Please sticky this warning.

Hopefully people will heed the warning, but unfortunately there will always be a few that will still try it and get bricked. There's a great alternative on the market right now that is pretty much safe to use (there's nothing 100% safe when it comes to Modding or changing a ROM). It's name is the A.C.S. Updater......

Thank you, I hate asking for a sticky but I felt it was absolutely necessary this time.

My friend downloaded Rom Manger and the phone bricked on him. After trying to Odin back the phone, which didn't work 'cause the phone wouldn't even go into download mode I took the phone, call Samsung told them it wouldn't power on they emailed me a call tag and fixed the phone in about 3 weeks. I sent them no battery cover and memory card. The phone was/is beat up looking abit. They were able to tell by the esn when the phone had been activated and went form there. I got the phone back rooted, shabbyfied it and its been running like a top.

I downloaded rom manager a while ago way before this post. ive never had a problem with it but ive never changed a rom with it either. Is that where you run into problems or is it with the app itself? i just use it when i need to reboot into recovery if i need to.

The app downloads fine from the market, but the Prevail is not a supported phone on Rom Manager, none of the ROM's that are on it are for the Prevail. YOU WILL HAVE A $150 plastic brick if you attempt to use a ROM off of the app until the Prevail is finally supported.

A better all around app to use in which the Prevail IS supported is the ACS UPDATER.

Hey everyone. I am new to these forums and to Android in general. I had this problem last week. I got rooted, uninstalled some things, then installed some apps (ROM Manager being one of them). Stupid! I should have known there was a problem when my phone wasn't one of the available options. Phone is totally black now. No download mode (so I can't use Odin), No recovery mode. Is there anything I can do, or should I just try to see if Samsung can fix it? The phone is only 2 months old. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Sorry to say but samsung is now your only hope.

As far as what causes problems it's trying to install a rom. You can use some of the other features fine but stay away from custom roms from rom manager.

ROM Manager isnt to blame for what could be your own mistakes. I think RM is a great app and it probably didnt brick your phone. You may have by flashing a recovery maybe not meant for you phone.

I didn't brick my phone. I posted this as a warning to others because there were a lot of people bricking their phones by trying to install roms and cwm through it.

I've edited a couple of posts that could seem unduly confrontational by members. Please think for a minute before hitting the "submit" button, so that your posts appear informational without being at all personal. ;)

wasn't aimed at anyone in particular ;)

Didnt mean confrontational, just sick of a good app being blamed for 'user error'. ;)

Yes, while Rom Manager may be a good app for SUPPORTED phones, for the Prevail for the time being it is not. I myself in the begining checked it out and realized that most of the selling points of the app wouldn't work with our phones. Honestly, anytime a phone gets bricked, isn't it for the most part usually "user error" though? Lol

    Good sticky thread

There is plenty of info ALL over the web to prevent this from happening.
On one hand I feel somewhat sad for these guys and on the other I don't.

PLEASE READ and inform yourself on what you are about to do to your phone. An hour or two of thread travel can relieve you from alot of pain and suffering.

Also don't be afraid to ask. I've noticed that most of the "HELP MY PHONE IS BRICKED" threads have the OP with a count of 2 or 3 total posts. Just ask if you're not sure about something.

I know that not everyone will help you out sometimes, but maybe that one person will.

I agree it's usually user error and the point in this thread is to avoid that. No offense to anyone but if a user can't tell what not to do and can't read warnings like these them they shouldn't be using apps such as rom manager.

I've never personally used it but I'm sure it is a good program. I'm not blaming it for peoples problems but extreme caution should be used when using an app that doesn't support your device especially one that makes changes at a root/system level.

99.999% of the time its user error lol

I agree, but it should explain why not to use, just not do not use as it will brick your phone. And that topic title will still be there long after, CWM is aviailable officially. I had this same debate in the Optimus M section and ppl saying RM and my CWM port would brick their phone.

Nah, thread title is fine. Anyone with enough experience to not end up bricking their phone wouldn't need a thread to tell them what to or not to use and if they felt comfortable using rom manager they would continue to do so.

Thanks for the post. I agree that many phones may be saved from this post. I also agree that most of the time it is user error when things go wrong due to lack of information or reading first but, I would also like to state some other bad exp. I've had using rom manager.
i've never bricked my prevail because I read before I act. I know that there isn't Roms for our prevails so I wouldnt try to flash one.
I used Rom Manager for about 4 months. Mostly to reboot phone & into recovery and clean the dalvik, and fix permissions but, in doing that, I have had bad experiances. Twice before I got rid of the app.
The first time I used the fix permissions option(supposedly just like CWM) and when I rebooted it factory reset my phone. Good thing I was turned on to TiBkup in shabby's mod or that would have been rough.
The second time was when I cleaned the dalvik cashe after getting rid of a few apps. again... Factory reset. At that point I realized that RM was just not friendly enough with the prevail...
    Oh, just for reference...
    Im rooted
    Shabby kernel & shabbymod .9
    V6supercharged, 3gturbo, & using kickasskernel
I've haven't had a problem with this using CWM since I uninstalled RM

the thing is RM and CWM work together as a unit. Now CWM can work just fine w/o RM, but RM needs CWM to do most of what it is intended to do. So again its not the apps fault. I got hroark up to speed on how to submit his build of CWM to koush so it can be officially built and merged into RM. SO hopefully once he gets that done koush will get it done in a reasonable time frame.

And in most cases CWM has to be officially built to have full RM support. I have seen unofficial builds work fully, but they had to be installed with RM, but I have found most ppl cant follow the instructions on how to install it with RM.

Yeah it does seem complicated for the average user. Im a bit of a computer geek and have been working with linux for quite some years now and after reading extensively on dutta's site I know I can do it but, the average android user probly isn't going to research the documentation and again, the app will take the blame.
Also, im glad you brought that up about CWM having to be built specificly for the device and that it had to be installed by RM. I got CWM from hroark's package with his latest kernel. I know he moded it to work with the prevail but is it an actual specific build or just one that works? I suspected this might be the case with my problem but didn't have the info to back up my theory. If so then that would also fall under the user error cat. as well.

unless something has changed last time i knew he had to edit graphics.c in the android_bootable_recovery section. which would cause koush to deny official status.

me personally dont see a reason why everyone wants rom manager support. the only thing that will happen then is you can flash cwm in the app.. there wont be any roms or themes or kernels in there....

I hard-bricked my Prevail by using Rom Manager. And yes, it was definitely user error. I never said the program was to blame. Just a tip.... Mobiletechvideos.com offers a JTAG service that can restore a hard-bricked phone. It's $30 and I got my phone back in a week. It's been fine ever since.
