Just picked up my Evo from Radio Shack earlier today and I inspected the hell out of it to make sure it wasn't one of the ones with the screen problems.

After I get home and check it out some more lo and behold the screen is moving up and down on the bottom when I push on it. Also the speaker in the phone sounds like absolute crap.

Now, I already know that the Radio Shack I bought it from is sold out. So would I be able to take it to a Sprint store to do an exchange or am I stuck with Radio Shack?

Also I plan on giving HTC a call to let them know yet another one of their phones is a POS.

Sorry to hear that. I think you have to take it back to RS. I ran into the same problem. RS was sold out when I wanted to exchange mine. Called Sprint and was told that they were out as well. A "manager" from sprint CS actually called me back and suggested that if RS wasn't able to exchange mine within a week, to call her back and that sprint would send a new one out to me.

I just decided to return it to RS and wait a little while for a later production run. To both their credit, RS/Sprint gave me no problems in returning it.

Reading that HTC is acknowledging some of the issues and making changes to production makes me hopeful that I will be back to the evo shortly. It really is a great phone in terms of features/design/UI...nothing on the market now or in the near future matches up in my mind.

I just wanted to comment that I was having that problem too, but I had worse problems. I had that grounding problem where you put it down on anything and the screen becomes unresponsive... I took it into the Sprint corporate store here and told them about it and they took 45 minutes but they put a brand new screen on it (because they didn't have any new ones to replace it with) and the phone is even better now than it was when I first got it.

I highly suggest that you do a master reset when you first get a phone before you start putting all your info and stuff on there. I can understand it's frustrating, but once you get the right one the phone is amazing. It's hard for me to put it down and I learn something new about it almost every day. It's a joy to use... and that screen... omg.

    Good luck.

Do you know how they replaced the screen?

So the new screen fixed the grounding issue? I had this problem as well. Reading the latest info, HTC is saying they can fix this via OTA but if it was fixed for you with a new screen, not sure how they plan to fix it with a software patch...

Well, there was no way it was a software problem for me. I mean, I used it just fine for a week and then after the first week it started going bad. I noticed the light leakage, then the next day the phone power cycled, and then when I put the phone down anywhere there was a area probably about a inch tall and all the way across the screen that just did not register anything when set down.

I did the test with a app called Draw and Share and ran my finger from the bottom of the screen to the top and sure enough it was not registering that area except sometimes when I had it in my hands. I told the guys at the Sprint store and even showed it to them and they said they'll put a new screen on it. Idk if they did anything more to it, maybe refitted it with some stuff and tightened things up but now the phone is amazing. I don't have any light leakage anymore either.

Maybe for some people it can be solved by a firmware update, but I doubt it would have done anything for me. I even did a hard reset to the factory shipped state and it still didn't work. But now everything is kosher and I am pleased.

Correction: I just checked and I still do have light leakage. I didn't notice because the Innocase I have on it blocks it, but I have it on the phone all the time so it doesn't bother me.

Whatever they did, glad to hear it fixed the problem for you. Hopefully this means it's something that can be fixed in future production runs if it is some hardware/production problem.

Oh also my 4G doesn't work either. I live in nw chicago which is said to have the best 4G coverage. I even checked on sprints coverage maps and I'm covered with 4G for miles. When I turn 4G on it searches then says "connecting to sprint" and goes right back to searching. I checked inside and outside and it doesn't make a difference.

They are supposed to fix a sensitivity issue ato. This issue is more aprent in arid climates I read. The grounding issue will most likely remain.

I agree with the hard reset. Also make sure you update your profile and prl. They might help both the sound and connecting issues.

What Hardware Build # do you have? (Settings / About / Hardware Info) - seems like the #001's have the screen problem. I have #002 and don't have any issues, but debating on exchanging it for the latest #003 anyway.. I mean why not?

I had 002 and had the screen lift as well as the grounding/unresponsive screen. In fact, I think most of the users who've experienced this seem to be 002, although some 003 seem to be having them as well.

I don't think it's just 002 vs 003 issue. Obviously things were changed from 002 to 003 but I don't think such changes were specifically to address the screen issue.

I've taken mine back and am going to wait a month to see if production changes fix some of these problems.

Hardware build for these phones has nothing to do with any of the problems that everyone is having. If a phone is made at a different factory, they would call it hardware build 1-3. Every build is having problems so it's not exclusive to any particular build of the phone. All the original spec models are still floating around since launch, and only now will HTC start making it less of a problem.

I can confirm what zamardii12 said.

Mine was one of the pre orders and it was hdw build 03. Yet it had a crummy ear piece speaker that made calls squelch at times and the bottom of the screen was leaking light. The bottom of mine actually had like a rough edge to the glass and it wasn't flat across.

That of course is where the light was leaking through.

Best Buy said they had no idea when they would have any in and that maybe I should exchange it for a diff phone to re set my 30 days. I just brought it back and returned it and went back to my palm treo pro. They were cool about it.

One thing they did mention, again they don't know how soon, but they will be the exclusive carriers of a WHITE version...

hmmmmm, that could be pretty cool to have one different from most others.

Wanted to mention also, my manager at work also got an EVO. Her's is perfect, the screen couldn't be any more perfect. I put a boxwave screen protector on for her, it too came out absolutely perfect, not even a spec of dust anywhere... alas ;)

Not to thread jack but the best buy 'exclusivity' of the white evo will be short-lived, as in like a month or 2

I live in Downers Grove no coverage either. On there map my house is in the middle of there strongest signal area your answer? THEY LIE! 4G Coverage in Chicago is very spotty. Do a ##786# from your keypad and see what hardware build you have. You will get a service screen come up and scroll down to the bottom and look for HW 00002 or 00003 let us know.

This is not true. Hardware build 3 supersedes 2 and 1 It has nothing to do with a factory at all.

I bought mine on launch day and it's a 002... So that's interesting. Obviously not all original launch EVO's were 001. Just a comment...
