I have a HTC Hero phone and I have been reading a lot of .apk files. Can you tell me what they are and is there a site that I need to go to inorder to install them?

    Thanks for helping this noob!

They're application files. You install apps with them.

Don't be. Grainy just has a short fuse. Don't hesitate to ask questions though because people most likely have the same question, so it helps everyone.

What I enjoy most about that response is the fact that your answer in not complete. So to you grainysand: *insert tactical facepalm*

TeamPEZ: .apk files serve several functions. They are basically just like a .zip file in Windows. In fact, you can rename an *.apk to *.zip and look inside of them in Windows.

They also serve as app installation files ... as grainysand so eloquently explained.

They also act as the application (executable) files the run the apps. Kinda like an *.exe or *.bat file in Windows/DOS.

Aww, look at you go. Imitation's the sincerest form of flattery and all that. So cute!

If someone needs to ask what .apk files are, chances are good that going into the minutiae of compression is going to be a waste of time.
