I keep it on auto pretty much all the time. It seems to do a reasonable job of keeping the brightness to comfortable level. I used to keep it down at around 20%, but that was a bit too dim for comfort, and in the grand scheme of things that suck the battery dry, I don't think the difference is very significant. I do wish there was a way to adjust the auto brightness; I'd kick it up just a bit.
