I know it's been talked about on here but I can't seem to find it.

I'm rooted with Fresh 1.1 and Gumbo. When 2.1 is released, is it recommended to go back to stock and install the update or is someone going to make a 2.1 rom that works EXACTLY like the one Sprint will release?

within hours of the released of the official 2.1 from Sprint, there will be a LOT of 2.1 ROMs available for us to use. some may be close or exactly like stock... others will be better...or more like Fresh or DC...

if you want to have the EXACT stock ROM... you'd have to unroot and then update... but keep in mind that you might not be able to root after the update..

So to flash these new ROM's, will I have to reset my phone before I load a 2.1? I don't want to have to redo all my settings and apps. Will I have to do that?

Basically, can I just load the new 2.1 roms over what I have now (fresh 1.1/gumbo) and it will work?

Flashing the same OS version over the top without a wipe is usually ok, but changing OS versions requires a wipe.

So either way if I load a custom 2.1 ROM when it's released or I unroot and load Sprint's 2.1, it will basically reset my phone?

I'm not sure if an OTA upgrade wipes your data, but when you load a custom 2.1 ROM, you boot into recovery, go into the wipe menu, run the wipe, then you back out to recovery again and go into the flash menu.

when you unroot (run the RUU) it will wipe your phone ....inorder to load a custom rom goin gfrom a android 1.5 to 2.1 then you have to wipe

just get a backup program from the market and it will backup all your apps

I'm just trying to decide if I want to run the RUU and get 2.1 from Sprint so I know it will be official or get 2.1 from a developer. But I guess either way I will have to wipe because if I wanna get Sprint's I have to run RUU and if I want a developers I have to wipe because I have fresh 1.1

Can't you unroot with RUU without wiping? If that's the case, then unroot first, get the official upgrade (which should allow you to keep everything), then after you have the official 2.1 re-root from that point and load up a 2.1 custom ROM.

    That might prevent wiping, no?

no running the ruu wipes it clean fresh out the box hero and there is the possibility that sprint or htc will block the exploit we have now that gives us root access so if you do go ahead and run the ruu and get the update from sprint when ever its released you could loose the option to root and load custom roms for the time being until a new exploit is found

This is an excellent point. I was automatically thinking I would RUU and then try the official 2.1 update, but totally forgot that this would eliminate the possibility of root until a new exploit was found. I can't imagine it taking more than a few weeks, though. Which is about how long it will take for really good ROM's to be made available.

I definitely want to RUU and update OTA to 2.1 just so I have a basis to compare when ROM's come out.

it could take a lot longer than a few weeks.. the Droid Eris, which is basically the same as the Sprint Hero with a couple minor changes has just recently (within the last few weeks) been rooted. Even then, if the patch it correctly, it is entirely possible that it could take several months to years if ever to root the hero.

As far as having a good ROM taking weeks... There will be good ROMS within hours of the Sprint 2.1 release... everything is in place except the needed Sprint Hero portions.. the Devs will drop them in and compile..

Sprints 2.1 upgrade does not by default eliminate our ability to root, but there is a very real a possibility that Sprint's release could contain a patch that plugs and seals all known exploits. It took them months to root the Eris, and the exploit they finally found was patched and sealed in the VZW 2.1 leak (although they think they've already hit on a new 2.1 exploit, but it's risky to the point where a single inadvertent mistake could permanently brick the phone).

If you're rooted now, and you like being able to tether, use root only apps, or some other benefit, then you might want to leave it rooted and bypass the OTA. Sprint's 2.1 release will spawn multiple new ROMs almost immediately that will be fully functional, customizable, and most likely optimized to run leaner and faster. There are already 2.1 ROMs that are all but ready to go, the devs are just waiting to get hold of correct Sprint components to drop in and compile.

(I posted this in another thread, but it seems better placed here)

Many have speculated that the "hole" that allows root on the current stock ROM may be closed with the new Sprint 2.1 ROM.

So, my question is....with the leaked Sprint ROMs in hand, shouldn't the devs be able to tell if the hole has been closed???

since this is supposedly a release candidate, and not an official release, the answer is no. only once the official release is out will they be able to tell
