I had typically set my brightness to minimum on all of my previous phones since it extended battery life a lot.do you guys put out on minimum, custom level or auto brightness.does auto sense the amount of light in the room and adjust accordingly?

Auto & Yes. The ambient light sensor detects the amount of light and adjusts accordingly.

yes auto sense works as you explain. Some people believe that auto sense is more taxing on the battery though. I personally switch it on my own depending on my environment. By using a widget on my home screen i find it to be quick and foolproof

I keep mine on the minimum setting. It's still bright enough to use and is amazing on the battery.

Mines at 50% at all times. I have had no problems seeing it at that level.

Mines set to BLINDING. Super bright and I can't see for 2 hours after, so that saves on the battery when I can't use it. JK! Auto for me.

The sensor is by the earpiece for listening to calls, by the indicator light :)

Has anyone tested the difference in battery between max and min brightness? I guess I could test that over the next two days.

Minimum, battery-saving mode, live wallpaper, BT, Sync, GPS always turned off. Wifi on only at home. Installed 604 update yesterday. Display set to 50%. Over 20 hours and still have 70% left.

Min/off inside...High outside. You can see it perfectly in direct sun if you have it set all the way up, but its unreadable if its set to min in direct sun.

    I use Auto.

Is it really worth frequently spending a few seconds to toggle the brightness (yes, I know there are good widgets for this) to save a few minutes (my guesstimate) per day of battery life?

You can leave GPS on. It is only running if you are using an app that needs GPS. Gets a fix faster.
