So I finally pulled the trigger and rooted last night, and backed up using Titanium Backup. Went to bed, woke up and my phone has been updated to 2.3.15. and I've lost my root.

yeah that sucks major balls because it updated the bootloader also...but I am sure some smart people will still figure out how to downgrade the bootloader to get it unlocked

But if you still want root...the D2 method works on the X for 2.2

Isn't there something we can do to make sure it doesn't update? Like some freezing some apk? Do you remember what it is?

Call VZW tell them the update porked your phone they will just send you another. But Birdman as tweeted there is a way to roll the boot loader back so it may not be an issue.

yeah I think there is, but I think it is called something different on 2.1
but I am going to look and also having clockwork recovery blocks it...I think

    2. Install Motorola Drivers
(Tip, to stop the launching of the Verizon/Motorola site, go to the MotoConnect icon in the bottom righ, right click, when phone connects, nothing.)

    what motorola drivers?

it has been confirmed that users with the official 2.1 (even if rooted) will get the OTA update. you have to be on a leaked 2.2 rom to block it, from my understanding anyways.

Being on a Verizon Account, according to the customer agreement (look under the section titled My Wireless Device) Verizon Wireless can change the software on your phone whenever they wish to.

Here is the link to the Customer Agreement : Customer Agreement

I think that if you are rooted in 2.1, you can still block it. The old (battery-sucking method) involved renaming the otacerts.zip file, but this just allowed the OTA download to occur over and over again since the OTA certification would fail.

The new method involves renaming or disabling the SystemUpdater.apk file to keep the OTA's from even being checked and downloaded. However, it appears that the SystemUpdater.apk has been renamed to BlurUpdater.apk for the Droid X (i.e., I cannot find SystemUpdater.apk on my X, but BlurUpdater.apk is present).

edit: there's also the possibility that its actually Upgrader.apk that is the culprit--but I cannot confirm this...
