I recently upgraded to the x about a month ago. I traded my droid and 150 for a new x off of craigslist. The guy i bought it from was real cool and swapped the numbers over fairly quickly. It was one of the happiest days i ever had. About two days ago while watching a video the screen burned out. Not sure if that's the right term for it but it's completely unvisible. Some of my friends say that he probably knew this was going to happen which i highly doubt, but even if he did i couldnt care less because the droid i gave him doesnt have a warranty. I called motorola and they said to send it in due to having the warranty still.

So basically my question is this. When i send them the phone will i recieve the same phone just fixed or will it be a completely new device? Im asking because i know with an assurion claim you recieve a new phone(which i can't do since purchased through craigslist.

Depending on the serverity of the problem related to the screen "burning out". They might just send you a refurb. If yours is fixable, then I would assume they would fix it and send it back to you. I doubt the dude knew the screen was going to burn out...I mean did it happen to him and then start working again? Probly not you know? crap just happens...but then again, you never know. It's always a risk buying something from somebody on CL. Keep us updated, would like to know if they send you the same one back, make a mark under the battery cover or write down the numbers on the phone, do something so you know it was you who done it you know? good luck!

You will receive a refurb... I just returned my bricked Droid X (bad software update) and received a refurb overnight. VZW didn't attempt to fix it even though I'm sure it would be an easy fix for them. They will probably fix it and offer it as a refurb to someone else.

My experience has been really good so far with refurbs. :D

Yeah, this is what will happen, it's much faster turn-around time to just send you an already repaired/refurb'd handset and fix yours later that to troubleshoot and fix yours and then send it back.

And I have also never had a problem buying refurb stuff. It's always looked brand new, worked perfectly, and had the full warrenty like a new device, but been much cheaper! I love refurbs! The way I see them, someone else already found the problem and got it fixed for me, so I don't need to worry about it! I even think most refurbs get better quality testing than new items because they need to make sure the problem is fixed, while with new stuff, they don't expect problems in the first place.

You will receive a refurb - that will look and run as though it were new. No regrets on mine!

You can probably expect a repaired phone or a new or refurbished replacement phone along with a bill.

Seriously, have you verified the warranty coverage? You didn't purchase it from Verizon so they would seem to have no warranty responsibility. Motorola's warranty is specifically limited to "the first consumer purchaser of the product" and states "This warranty extends only to the first consumer purchaser, and is not transferable.", so if the person you purchased from was the first consumer purchaser then the Motorola warranty apparently ended with them.

i posted a couple days ago about me wanting to know what i'd get back in the mail when i sent my droid x in to motorola for warranty use. Well i sent it in and all should be well no problems mailing it or anything. Then this morning it hit me harded than ike turner. I rooted my droid x and bootstrapped recovery. I didn't go into detail in my last post about this but the way my droid x is broke is that the screen is completely unvisible except for the very top. When it turns on all you see is clockwork recovery at the top( i'm sure most of you can imagine what it looks like. OMG please tell me that this won't affect them sending me my phone back.Or anything for that matter.

They may not cover it under warranty since they'll be able to see that it's rooted if they check.

    Ouch!

I'd like to think that the phone belongs to you and they will return your property even though the deny the warranty claim.

Why not go to the VZ store to get the warranty claim, or even call in to CS? They do the claims over the phone and will send you a replacement device and a box to ship yours back.

Hopefully this is a lesson learned.

GL and keep us posted the outcome.

My gut feeling is that they won't even turn it on, when they see the broken screen. It's in God's hands now, huh?

I tend to agree with Steven58. Bricked and broken are two different things. They probably see so many broken phones tThey just check the glass say yep that's broken and send a replacement. They won't fix that phone too much time and labor. Just send you a new one.

Mind if I use your "hit me harder than Ike Turner". Love it!!

sundown (VZW employee) posted something about warranty returns a not long ago...99% chance they won't do a damn thing but send you a new one. If I find the post...I'll link it.

I doubt they even look at it before they send a new/refurb one.... They check the return number throw it in a pile and send a new/refurb one.

They do fix them, it's cheaper than building new phones, this is why he will get a refurbished phone and his old phone will become a replacement phone for someone else. Most likely they won't check the phone though, just repair it, flash it, inspect it and ship it.

I bricked one while sbf'ing. The battery died at 97%. W well I had no way to get another battery in the near future so I went ahead and did a warranty claim. I took it in, thinking they wouldn't be smoke to turn it on, but sure enough they tried a car charger and it booted up into the bootloadet and read ready to program. File corrupt. That stuff. I told them that the battery had died while installing the ota. The rep told the person over the phone everything my phone said and was doing and I gav no problem getting a replacement. Then that replacement had screen responsiveness issues. So I unrooted it in preparation to do another warranty claim and I took it in, they checked it out and determined it was junk. She checked the bootloadet and rebooted it then handed it to me. Then it booted in clockwork to my surprise. so I was a few seconds away from getting caught there. But sill had no problem getting a replacement.

that's right. vzw doesnt check to see if a phone has been rooted once it has been replaced.
however, he said he sent it to moto to have it repaired. this does worry me a bit. you can bet the techs at moto know exactly what clockworkmod is, and will likely respond accordingly if they go the route of fixing the phone, rather than just replacing it. i would say you have a 50/50 chance at the moment.

my question is, why was it sent into moto?
