Ok, so I've been hearing alot about these custom roms and was wondring what it was. What can you do with a custom rom? And how do you create one? I am wanting this Sprint HTC Hero to run so much quicker then 528mhz I want something more snappy and less lagging. Someone help me. I don't know how to root my phone.

Rom is pretty much just a user interface. Some roms are based on HTC sense interface and others are just the plain android interface for the phone. example: Windows or Linux or Apple. You can create your own rom, but takes a lot of time and effort so it's better off using other people's rom. Not worth the time unless you're really into it that stuff.

Before you do any of that, be sure to read fully what's on there in the forums or else your phone will screw up. And always nandroid, always before doing anything to the phone.

So if you want to overclock your phone, you're going to have to root your phone first. And to root your phone you have one of two ways to do it.

[GUIDE] How to Root Sprint 2.1 Release for CDMA Hero - xda-developers
    or
    [APP] [ROOT] 1-click root for N1 (Latest ver: 1.6.2 beta 5) - xda-developers

To overclock the phone you need to find out which rom you are using and find the right kernel for it here: [KERNEL][7/22/10]Darchstar's Overclocked Undervolted kernel for senseUI roms vUV 2 - xda-developers and then download an overclock app from the market and set your cpu speed.

Good info, yanger1982! I've moved the thread to the All Things Root sub forum.

You do not need to overclock your phone, most custom roms will be so much faster than the stock 2.1 anyways. Until you are comfortable with flashing new roms, doing nandroids, restoring nandroids.... don't worry about overclocking just yet.;)

it's not really all that hard, you should be able to do this yourself, but if you don't trust yourself find your tech savvy friend and let them do it for you. It should only take 30 mins max to do it all. But yea, just do what andygu3 said. Just root the phone first and see how it goes. Try all the roms you want, since not all of them are the same and some are faster than others. It's all preference. If it's still too slow for you, then think about overclocking it.

Hm. Normally I am the one telling people how to do stuff. Not this time. I don't know any tech people Herr in Nashville. It sounds easy, but what if I screw my phone up? And what do you mean by overclock?

The only way you will screw up your phone is if you flash a GSM rom:eek: or the wrong radio:eek:

Overclock simply means overclocking the processor of the phone. Some phones can handle frequencies up to 768mhz but most are stable without any trouble between 691mhz and 710mhz

Well, either you will like the Sense UI that HTC has or you may like AOSP roms which is more vanilla android without the HTC framework.

Right now there only 2 froyo/2.2 roms out and they are AOSP. There are a couple of Sense/froyo roms being developed as we speak, still in the beginning stages.

The other roms out there will be based off 2.1 NOT froyo/2.2
