whats the point of the "wimax" LED on the right of the phone? the only time I've seen it activated is with the 3rd party app? did HTC intend this LED to do something?

Apparantly it was supposed to activate when in hotspot or 4g mode, but htc decided not to use it.

    eh, wasted hardware really.

I just use it for a notification replacement for everything but Gtalk and Gmail (can't seem to get those to use it). It's much brighter, and more noticeable.

It's like your car's instrument panel, if you look closely, you'll probably see that it has provisions for indicator lights that don't apply to your car or even any of that model. Hardware designers have to plan for what might be planned in the beginning that don't make it to production. It's just easier to leave it in instead of redesigining the hardware.

For me, I'm glad the extra LED is there and that someone wrote an app to take advantage of it.

Hopefully Handcent enables the option of using this led.

  10. Which app would that be?

That is a brilliant idea. I hope someone over at XDA makes a go of it!

You know, the light could be used to signal your phone to turn into an island and fly you to it or something... could be handy in a tight situation.

The phone can already alert you via the notification bar when you are in a 4G spot. I turned this on for half a day and got tired of the constant notifications as it went between 3G and 4G.

If you have it set to auto-connect, there's no point in knowing that you've entered a 4G spot. Took me half aday to figure this out :p

The notification bar is of little use to me unless the screen is on (battery killer) and I put on my reading glasses to decipher the tiny icons. A quick glance in the phone's general direction (without my Carl Levin glasses) shows orange or green for charging status. I would love the same quick glance method for 4G.

Auto-connect will leave the phone searching and grabbing for a 4G signal. I know what that does to my battery

I still can't see the utility in knowing this information. I assume HTC could not see the same utility, thus their abandonment of this LED's use.

If the phone is able to notify you that you are in a 4G spot, then it must be polling for 4G towers. This is a battery use, and IMHO, you may as well leave 4G on.

Let's put battery use aside for now...why is it important to know you are in a 4G zone?

So you feel better about yourself for paying an extra $10 a month for 4G

    Ha Ha!

I'm also curious. It would be nice to glance at my phone while driving and see that little green light, or the orange one for that matter. I just like knowing.

Get a red or blue laser and you are guaranteed to win.

  21. I like the idea of that app for using the WiMax LED, but I have two problems.

First, how do I disable the normal green LED so that I don't have 2 of them flashing for text messages?

Second, I get a lot of messages about the indicator starting up and shutting down as well as a couple of force closes. Is this normal or am I reasonable for expecting something more?

The program has no useful options and force closes too much for me to continue using it. Maybe it has been updated to fix this? I really like using the secondary LED but unless I can control it there is no reason for me to use it.

Mine did this just yesterday. I didn't know this was a common issue...I didn't read up on it.

I may uninstall it and hope for more development.

The second LED is good when you have Always Flash downloaded. It blinks when you are charging you phone so you know if you have a notification.
