Had my Droid for about 24 hours now and am impressed with the functionality and features, but the lack of phone signal is disappointing so far. I am averaging only about -96 dBm in my home. This is significantly lower than my EVO on Sprint. On the other hand, 3G for data is good - 3-4 bars.

What is everyone else averaging for dBM on the phone/voice, is it possible I have a bad unit?

I get about the same on mine, in the basement, in a poor area of coverage.

Perhaps the Sprint tower is closer to you than the verizon tower?

Droid x is generally considered to be one of the better phones for reception.

I live in a good reception area. I average -73. What software is on it? Look in Settings/About Phone and see what it says under System Version. Try turning Airplane mode on and off, try the *228, option 2. And yea it could be a bad unit.

Does Verizon have good reception in your area? At my job its a bad reception area for Verizon.

EDIT: I just did *228, option 2 and I went down to -68...lol But I average in the low to mid -70's.

    version 1.13.604.MB810.verizon.en.US.

Tried the *228 and no improvement.

Yep, the Sprint tower is closer. I just didn't think there would be that much of a vast difference.

I get in the -60's and -70's. I have a MonoPine (Monopole designed to resemble a Pine Tree) about a mile from my place on a hill, it's owned by U.S. Cellular and has panels from USCC and VZ on it (Verizon's are on the top).

-71. But my calls are crystal clear so I don't really care what the number is.

Is there an app that I can use to keep track of this? Or do I have to open up the settings each time?

Well, at least I now know I don't have a bad phone. This morning I drove by the General Mills headquarters (tends to be a voodoo center for great cell phone signals) and I was getting -67...so it does have good reception in a clear area.

Wish there was something I could do to improve reception at home. I don't want to be placing any antenna on my roof or anything. I haven't dropped any calls...yet.

At what point (number) do calls usually start dropping? Is it -105 and beyond?

I found the limit to be about- 120db when I get the no service icon. Anything besides that I can make calls no problem

I've never seen lower than -90dbm in my home though my X doesn't drop calls when in the mid -90s. Normal as far as I can tell for my home area.

-72 in an area I consider not too good :) . We have good signal here. Indoors.
-67 outdoors. Will see what it's like at home......a place I used to have to go outdoors and stand on a chair to make a call on AT&crap(and their techs said "the signal measures good there") ;)

So, I bent over and bought a network extended for $149 ($100 off 249 as instant rebate). Now I've been seeing -54 to -62 for the last few hours. Hope it stays that good. Was it worth it? It was the difference between returning the phone to Verizon and obtaining another line with Sprint. I really want 2 separate providers. This is good - so far. Because I'm liking the DX...
