As an active forum member, and person who likes to share digital goodies, I would like to ask, when 2.1 OTA does start rolling out for Droid Eris, what should I do if I am one of the lucky few to get it first?

From the Motorola Droid forum post concerning the first guy who posted that he was getting 2.1, he was getting quite dissed for not copying the update.zip file before rebooting his phone. I don't want to catch that hell that guy is getting if I jump in here and brag that I got the update but missed snagging the file to share with my fellow Droid Eris users.

    Suggestions?

Don't brag. A slip of the lip will sink a ship.

I'm gonna reboot and then strip down and run around the neighborhood yelling "OTA!! OTA!! OTA!!". :D

After that, I'm sure I'll be using my new 2.1 Eris to call a lawyer!!

Yeah, I have a suggestion: don't ever worry your head about "catching hell" in forums such as this one. Just do your thing, cleanly as possible and either constructively or with humor and let the chips fall where they may.

Be yourself. Brag away, if that's you.

Just update your phone as normal... then check out all of your new features and apps, and feel free to brag about it if you'd like... everyone will get their turn ;)

Kinda sucks that no one actually answered his question of how to rip the update.zip from his phone to share with everyone. Sucks even more that i dont own an eris and dont have the answer to the question :p

From reading the Droid forums, it seems that when you get the update notice (triangle notification) the file is already on your SD card.
    At that point:
    - decline to update
    - connect to your PC via usb
    - copy the update.zip to the PC
    - unmount
    - reboot
    - the update will now occur

    (Disclaimer: I've never done this)

I wonder if the fact that it's pushed to your card means that an Eris user who does not want the update can remove the card and put in another card (after copying stuff they want from the card to the new one with their computer) and live happily ever after with 1.5.

Only Frisco would try to figure out how to stay on 1.5 indefinitely.

My phone works perfectly. I do not need to "upgrade" anything that works this well.

I do not think I am the only Eris owner who feels that way, but I don't care if I am; I bought a great phone after a lot of looking around, now they want to change it.

Well, there was talk of an upgrade back then, but I did not know the extent of it (the whole OS?).

I can't help but wonder....if you did that, would the phone automatically not search it out again and find the update and download it to the card again. Virtually put you in an upgrade notification circle every day. :p

The whole thing reminds me of the stock Handmark weather/news/sports application nag in my old Samsung Instinct. I refused the upgrade notification when I found out all it did was cause banner ads to appear at the top of the weather and news, etc.

The nag would appear every time I went to use the application. I kept refusing, clicking, "decline."

Finally, after a few weeks, it gave me two entirely different choices, "accept" or "quit." In other words, I could not use the app unless I upgraded.

Thus my phone shopping and Eris I now have.

THAT reminds me of my Blackberry Storm2. 31 days after purchase, they changed the software in the phone and made it so you could only use Bing from the home page in the browser. I pitched a fit with Verizon, and Eris I now have. :D
