I need to do a factory reset, unfortunately.

I've backed stuff up - the only think I can't find is the photos I have set with my contacts. I've taken these photos with the contacts app, using the camera, and they are the ones that appear when an incoming call is made. However I've searched all the available directories, including the obvious DCIM, albumthumbs, etc, and can't find them anywhere.

I want to save them - where are they?!

You just sync your contacts with your gmail account

I'm not sure I want to do this, my gmail account has way too many contacts in that I wouldn't want on the phone.

All I want is to get hold of those images that have been assigned to the contacts, and then wipe everything.

As far as i know they are stored together with all the other contacts data in the same sqlite database file.

    I see.

And being on an orange contract, that's not something I can access is it? If I root the phone, I lose them, so I guess I'm resigned to losing them then.

I'm pretty sure there are at least few apps for that. I got couple when entered "contacts backup" in the Market. Definitely worth a try.

The problem is, I've already screwed the phone up. All to do with the switch from googlemail to gmail.... I removed the googlemail account details, but now can't enter a new gmail address - hence I can't access the market to download such apps.

    Thanks Google...

WaveSecure can, aside from many other things, make a backup of your contacts, photos and all

Yeah, I'm sure - but I can't get onto the market!

I suppose there isn't a way for someone to download the app and email it as an .apk file?

Well as far as I can tell it doesn't work properly.

I've installed it and registered. I backed up my contacts.

    1) Viewing the contacts on the PC, the images are not there.

    2) After creating a new contact, backing it up, then deleting it, I go to restore it. It doesn't get restored.

    3) Half the time it just force closes anyway.

Can't you use HTC Sync and sync the contacts with Outlook on your PC? Over here, it includes contact pictures as well.

I don't get it. I synced with Outlook, I've used WaveSecure, I've scoured my SD card and SIM, and these images just don't appear anywhere. And yet they are on my phone when I see my contacts.

    They must be ghost images.

It's lucky I'm a developer. In the end I had to write an app to get to these photos, and save them onto the SD Card. I'm there, finally.
