    so far i've looked at

Got Root? EVO 4G Rooting Instructions Released | Android News, Reviews, Applications, Games, Phones, Devices, Tips, Hacks, Videos, Podcasts - Android Police

    [TUTORIAL] How To Root The HTC EVO ~ Part-1 \0/ - xda-developers

and on another android forum. every thread is huge with a TON of people having problems and answers scattered everywhere. is there ONE place with an updated guide for windows and mac or just mac that officially roots so i can install custom roms?

what about downgrading? i've been bouncing all around to different forums and guides and none are clear.

The XDA thead by toast also says his root doesn't allow custom roms but i've seen custom roms mentioning toast?

the update that came out on launch day is the .6 update. you do not need to downgrade in order to root your phone and install custom roms.
there is not a single reason for you to downgrade.

just follow the directions on android police and enjoy the new fun with your evo

the second part was just to show you an easy way to get into Recovery....the rooting part was easy, but to get into recovery window was hard....i had to go thru the second part to be able to install the ROMs that pple made :( after going thru this i didnt have to install the SDK...to think about it i didnt have to use "adb commands"

you get the superuser app by flashing a custom rom that has super user on it.

I understand that I need to wipe the evo twice, but how do I get that data back? (contacts, apps, etc...) Is that why the recovery file is made? Is that data automatically loaded back on after I boot the root file? Sorry for the newb questions, only been on android for a week! Thanks!

contacts are all stored in the google cloud (at least for me) apps you purchased you can re-download through the market once you sign in with your google account. any other app you just have to search and get.

vide, did you use Rom Manager to make your backup before wiping it? Everytime I try to to use Rom Manager I get an error saying I do not have permissions. Is the Rom Manager in the tutorial video a different version?
