Titanium backup advises checking for correct rooting by running 'whoami'.

I recently rooted my (Thailand) phone and tried this check - whoami does not exist!!! Other things seem to work correctly, though.

Discussing this with a colleague, who is convinced his milestone is correctly rooted, he tried it, with the same result.

I cannot run whoami as root.
I cannot run busybox as root.

I can go to /data/data/.../TitaniumBackup, and run the titanium version of backup, though.

backup whoami works, and gives unknown uid.

I ran ls -l /system, and found some things are gid:root, while other things are gid:shell.

    I tried su
    and su -

Access was through abd shell, if that helps.

    Any comments???

First thing is how did you root your phone?

It would be trite to say I followed the directions on this site, because this never includes any mistakes or omissions one may have inadvertently made.

I raise the observation because the same problem has been reported to me by someone who is convinced he has a properly rooted phone.

Is there anyone else with a properly rooted milestone who cannot run 'whoami' as root?

Just because it's a Linux kernel doesn't mean the same it's the same used for x86 distros (it's now it's own tree separate from Linux). There are a lot of differences.
