why do i need a Gmail account to download are go in to the market?

I was supprise tha i needed a Gmail account to download are go into the market .
Can some please explain why are post a link .Like i said this is my first smartphone.

Market is Google's, so they use a gmail account to identify you. You don't have to use the account for anything more than Market if you don't want to, although a gmail address isn't like an aol address - everyone uses them now. If you don't want to play with 2 email accounts (and it's trivial in most email programs), just have your gmail account automatically forward all email to your "real" account.

I would jsut get a gmail account, you need it for most things these days. Google webmaster, adsense, google+, and the list goes on......
