htc made so beautiful things the last month (touch pro, touch diamond). why does that g1 have to be so ugly. but anyway... i thought that thing is called "OPEN handset alliance". so why do i have to switch to t-mobile in order to be able to use android? i want to buy my (maybe htc) phone and choose a carrier i like. i don

    Actually, no you didn't.

Anyway, I like the design. After having my Dash for almost two years, anything looks better.

OPEN is not about taking it from carrier to carrier. It's there to allow the user to customize (nearly) everything. I'm not a JAVA developer, but it looks like I'll learn so I can build some apps that would be useful to me. I could do it with WM, but I've never really gotten into it. WM is rather clunky.

From what I've seen, this is a great FIRST PHONE for the OS.

looks great to me, I have the MDA from HTC and I didn't mind that one either.

I didn't know that I'd care for the look much until I saw it in video's. It's smaller than I thought it would be. I like it.

However, I too would like to be able to put Android on whatever device I wanted. And take any device to any carrier - much like how computers/isp's work.

    how do you know?

well... and as we say: tastes are different. fortunately.
but after seeing the latest htc windowsmobile devices i just was quite disapointed by the g1 hardware and software design.

and if you think OPEN means that you can write your own applications: you could do that for any java-able device out there. if its my 4 year old cellphone or the housemanager which closes my parents windowshades at night. OPEN to me means i can choose whatever provider/carrier, software or hardware i like. of course every hardware needs it

    hi,
the hardware and software is sure better than iphones. no doubt.
and i realize that you will be able to use "skins" to customize the
interfacedesign. at least the graphics. interfacedesign is more than
graphics as we all know. but i will not say anything about usability
and interaction before i had chance to test it.
but after all.. if you compare the touch pro design to the g1 design...

and i see that you usa

let's clear something up about "open" as to how it pertains to two different things in this case.

there is the open source OS, android. the OS is based on linux, and is open source. this means the OS kernel can be rewritten without the owner's permission, but credit must be given for derivative works. this means the OS can be reworked by anyone as they see fit.

the second "open" is the open handset alliance, for which google, t-mobile, and sprint are a part of. AT&T and verizon are not a part of the open handset alliance. what the OHA is designed to do is to set the standard for an open OS to be freely distributed and applied to a range of handsets, or is otherwise hardware agnostic. it has nothing to do with subsidy locking or inter-carrier compatibility; as you know tmo has joined att and verizon on LTE while sprint will be adopting wimax for their respective 4g technologies, and thus not compatible. in this case, the OHA is about hardware agnostic operating systems so that developers can create apps that can function on a deeper level of integration with MANY devices.

but as for the aesthetics, yeah... it's ugly IMO. but realize this is the ifrst handset in the open handset alliance and android program. there will be more hardware down the road of varying styles, all running android if this program gets off the ground.

as for the design, look to Google's mobile platform Director, Andy Rubin... he used to work for Danger and had designed the Sidekick. so now you know.

I just want to interject and reinforce the beauty of OPEN.

Some people will love the G1 hardware from HTC. The trackball and chin on the bottom are actually very useful and the keyboard is rather nice. I hate touch screen keyboards.

Others will HATE it. But any carrier and any manufacturer can come out with another Android device. With different specs. With different features. Different shapes, sizes, weights, materials. Its not like we're all waiting on HTC and T-Mobile to come out with the next Android phone 1 year from now.

Not everyone will like the G1 and the companies clearly went for the mainstream consumer with this model. Its a good choice for a starting Android device. There will be plenty of other Android devices focused at the higher end and lower ends, too. This one is somewhere in the middle which gets everyone's attention.

By the way, I think it looks ugly... in PICTURES. Once you're holding the device it looks rather nice.

Rob, is that the brown G1 in the media pictures you posted? It looks like a dark brown that's almost black.
