Why move apps to external SD card?

This may sound a stupid question but why move apps to an external SD card apart from to free up space on internal storage?

I would have thought it would take longer to load an app that is stored on external SD card than internal?

Ive seen loads of threads about how to move them, but none about why to move them to external SD card.

Just to free up space really. Some phones aren't bless with a large internal storage or internal sd.

And other than the initial load up when the phone is first started (the more apps you have on external sd the long it takes to mount, link, and get them to a usable state) I haven't seen any noticeable lag or longer load time.
