widgets not visible (newbie)

I am clearly missing something Soooo simple...

I have downloaded apk for a clock widget.
It installs fine and shows as being installed.

press-hold home screen > widgets visible - but NOT the clock. I have tried more than one widget.

On a Samsung Galaxy

You didn't install the app to SD? Widgets don't work if you do that.
