    Hi,

I recently made the switchover from iPhone to the brave new world of Android. My new Samsung Note 2 is awesome - love it. Until Christmas day when I get a software upgrade to 4.1.2.

Now my wi-fi wont work (it gets stuck at 'obtaining IP address' - I have tried it on several wi-fi networks with the same result) and I am stuck!

Can any of you brilliant people out there tell me what to do? I would be happy to revert to an earlier version of the OS if I knew how.

Please bear in mind that I have the technical abilities of a small child (I really do not understand how anything on my new android phone works!)

    Cheers

Now I feel foolish as the wi-fi has started working again.

No idea why it stopped - happy it started again.

Thanks for all your help :)

I have a Note 2 device for almost two months, and the wifi connection always worked perfect.
Few days ago I left on a trip and forgot the Note 2 at home. Never mind the expected trouble that it got me too, when I came back home yesterday night, I turned it on and since then doesn't matter what I do (turn on and off, taking out and back in a sim card, checking settings), it gets stuck on "obtaining IP address"..
same happens on other networks, while my laptop seems get on same wifi networks as usual.

Any advice anyone? I didn't want to open a new thread since this one is on only from yesterday..

    thanks in advance!

    Hi

Does it see the available networks? ie in settings-wifi does it list the available ones? I guess it does.

Long press the network name, select "modify network config", select show advanced options, normally Proxy settings should be "none" and IP settings DHCP. I don't know why these would change unless someone messed with the phone (or router) while you were away.

it does show all networks available..

this is the annoying part: no settings were changed. at all..

If you are having the issue with 3g and 4g networks as well, you might need a new SIM card. I had the same issue with my old Rezound. You can get a free one from Verizon.

I have the same problem on my wifi point at home. On other wifi points I have tried, they work fine. Sometimes I will get an "authentication failed" and I can reconnect without an issue. I have found some people with the Galaxy S3 has had similar issues. Going to wait for an update from Samsung to fix it.

i do like the fact that you updated your post once it worked. a lot of times i google for some odd problems and OP rarely comes back and say they got it working again or not. or, if they found the solution they just say "oh nevermind got it" or "oh fixed" without details.

Interesting, mine started exhibiting this very issue last night.

I will keep an eye on this thread since nothing I have tried so far fixed the issue.

Have you tried to reboot your router and see if the problem still persists? I have a router that drops network on some users from time to time and have to power cycle the entire network to get it all working again.

Go to the wifi connection settings in your phone, find the one you use and 'forget' it. then turn off wifi, then back on again, do a scan, find yours then re enter the password.

Haven't tried that. I use an AirPort Extreme.

    Tried that, no luck.

It all started when I updated to multiview. I have two more Note 2 phones sealed in box so if I cannot figure it out I will switch to one of those and do not do the multiview update.

In the meantime, iPhone 5 it is.

Thank you guys for your advice.

It's stuck on Obtaining IP Address

Only other thing to try is to assign a static IP to the Note 2 and see if it picks it up. I am assuming nothing else has changed in the network setting except for the Note 2 update. Maybe a conflict with IP address assignment.

If this fails, last resort would be to do a factory reset. Unfortunately that will wipe all data in the internal memory of the device. So make sure all important data is backed up prior to doing this.

If anything it might be like the original Note and ICS update which exposed a hardware/software incompatibility with the GPS. Some had to get their Notes exchanged because of it. Of course only a small amount of users experienced this.

I tried the static IP route too but with no luck.

    Thank you for your advice.
