WiFi only

a wifi only mode on the phone would be nice.

as would a "wifi only" plan: no included data, no included messaging (since I get my messaging through another package), no included T-Mobile Hotspot access. But full access to everything (web, gmail, etc.) when you're within a non-T-Mobile hotspot.

If you have an unlimited messaging service/option (G1 or other), then you should have full access to gmail and contacts (maybe calendar) for no extra cost, since "messaging" includes email, and that should cover gmail.

And, then, if you want T-Mobile Hotspot access, you'd just get that add-on service/option.

Would be excellent if there was an app that would [toggle wiFi only] so that when travelling abroad our phones would only connect to the internet where a Wifi spot was availble thus saving us 100's of pounds on roaming data charges.

You want WiSync or WiSyncPlus. Both are available on the market. WiSync is free but has far less functionality. For a poor-man's solution try WiSync + APNDroid. It works okay but is far from seamless; but hey, it is a free solution. As a side benefit, WiSync can also increase your standby time by controlling/limiting synchronization; though the increase is not nearly as dramatic as what you gain with WiSyncPlus.

For a far, far better solution use WiSyncPlus. The application has a fairly involved FAQ which is frequently updated based on user input and questions. It also has the added advantage of drastically increasing your battery life. How does 400+ hours of standby time sound on a G1? That's 100 hours more than what Apple claims for the iPhone 3G.

WiSyncPlus allows you to schedule your device's synchronization over both WIFI and cell network, control ALL Internet access, including Google's core services, in a coarse grained manner, drastically improve standby battery life (all that stuff isn't constantly running and using the network in the background), and limit or completely prevent roaming fees.

As for roaming fees, if you're charged for roaming, it's because you explicitly allowed it!

There really are few applications, if any other, which provides as many benefits.

If you're at all curious, read the FAQ. It explains tons. This is not hype and no bull.
