So when I connect to wifi does it add wifi speed to my 3g speeds or does it only use wifi or only use the faster of the two?

It replaces the data connection with the wifi.

It only uses one or the other. Which is why the wifi icon takes over the 3g one once its connected.

    Which is better?

My 3G is almost twice as fast as my wifi using speedtest. I get from 900 to 1500 kbps with 3G and only around 500-700 with my wifi.

Are there advantages in using one or the other?

Considering I get 10Mb on WiFi, I'd say you need to look at your WiFi solution and make some changes.

^ Yeah, sounds like either your Wifi has issues or your Internet connection is pretty lame. :)

The WiFi is only as good as the internet connection it's routing to. So if the WiFi is connected to 20Mbit fiber, then obviously it'll knock the socks off 3G.
