Is this possible? There's a class in campus where I get no bars so id like to just use wifi.

With the cell radio on my battery drops extremely quick.

Yes, i actually did the same thing the other day. First put it in airplane mode, then go to wifi settings and turn on wifi. That simple.

Will the GPS/Maps work while in the Airplane Mode with Wifi turned back on?

I think GPs relies on GPS not WiFi - if Airplane mode disabled GPS then you'll need to enable it manually.

    Just try it and see....

It appears to me that if you go into Airplane mode the GPS does not work

I think GPS works, what you are experiencing is the maps not loading without the internet connection

well, if maps do not load how can the GPS work? the screen just shows searching for satelite....and nothing happens....so when I go to Europe how should I set my phone as to not get phone service but just email capabilites via WiFi and GPS?...Thanks sberde

I don't think you would get phone service regardless as I'm pretty sure they don't have CDMA networks in Europe, but you might want to check on that. However, I'm pretty sure that using GPS navigation would rely on some sort of data connection so I don't think you would be able to use it in airplane mode.

If I were you I would just leave the Droid in the United States.

There are applications that use the GPS that don't require maps so it will work without an internet connection. It just depends what application you are using and whether it requires an internet connection to work properly.

It is beginning to sound to me that the Wifi will work, but we know the phone system will not work...so it sounds also to me that I would be able to email via Wifi and that is about it...thanks for your input everyone....sberde

Yes it's possible I do it at school since it's like a black hole for cellphone service in the middle of it and I will literally drop half the battery with it just on standby for 6 hours. But with the wifi I can at least receive emails and other data services. At least toting over wifi would be nice...as for gps you can download apps that have all the maps preloaded onto the phone so you won't need data services to use gps.
