You would need to wait for an American company(seems AT&T will pick it up) to update a version with compatible 3G frequencies.

Or alternatively wait for a Canadian or South American release. They use the same bands (AT&T's 850/1900)

What frequency does t-mob use in USA? The Nexus One runs on the American t-mobile network, and in the UK doesn't it?

At the end of April, Telstra (Australia) will release a phone with 850/2100MHz UMTS frequencies, which I believe will work on AT&T as they use 850MHz. This could work for you.

Price in Aus is ~$750AUD outright. Which is how I am buying mine, but I live in Aus, so it is easy for me.

The Nexus One is quad band though isn't it, where as the Desire is Dual or triple (can't remember which without looking it up).

Apologies, doesn't that mean that you will get edge, but no 3G if you use this Desire?

The N1 is Quadband GSM (850/900/1800/1900) and Triband UMTS (900/1700/2100) whereas the Desire is Quadband GSM and Dualband UMTS (900/2100)
