i'm not a developer or programmer, so i'm hesitant to root my vibrant. however, samsung has a bunch of problems with this phone due to their touchwiz. for example, there is no way to change the ringtone on the calendar alerts. the default ringtone is short and quiet. i never hear my calendar alerts and makes my calendar almost useless. if i can fix this, and maybe a few other issues, i'll keep the phone. otherwise it's going back.

will rooting my vibrant eliminate the samsung touchwiz software and put a, for lack of better term, purer version of android on my phone and fix these types of issues?

You can change your notification ringtone to a louder, more obvious one...

Menu > Settings > Sound & Display > Notification Ringtone

And I guess this answers your original question since TouchWiz isn't keeping you from doing the above steps... ;)

Rooting alone wont make your phone better or worse. What it does do, however, is allow you to have complete control over things that were otherwise locked down by the manufacturer (Samsung). You have the ability to remove apps that were originally unable to be removed, freeing up space and generally making your phone a little faster.

It also gives developers the ability to create custom roms. These do usually come with improvements to make your phone faster and better, however they can also come with many bugs, depending on the developer and the phone.

    Hope this helps!

unfortunately, the notification ringtone is not the calendar reminder ringtone. on every other android phone you go to the calendar->menu->settings-> and on this menu screen there is an option for calendar ringtone or calendar alert. i went to a tmobile store today and checked it on four other android phones, they all had it. the vibrant does not have this option. hence, the reason for my dissatisfaction and post. :(

i have a general understanding of what rooting does. overclocking, installing apps on the sd card, etc... i would rather not root the phone, but not being able to hear calendar reminders is a deal breaker for me. i use my calendar to remind me of everything and i'll have to send it back if i can't find some sort of workaround. i would absolutely love this phone if this worked and when they get the gps and compass issues fixed.

Just curious if you've found anything as a good replacement since your last post. I too use my calendar for a lot and recently purchased a Vibrant. I upgraded from a G1 so of course i love the performance, memory, etc of the Vibrant. I actually don't mind Samsung's Touchwiz either. However, when it comes to the Calendar, I found two HUGE disappointments. One, as you mentioned, was the alarm. It is a must to have a customizable notification for a calendar, I mean come on, really?!? I can't beleive that is missing. Also, hyperlinking is missing. I like, while on my laptop, plan things in my calendar, entering phone numbers, websites, and addresses so that when I am out and about, I can go to my calendar and click through to the dialer, maps, web, etc. I cannot believe they did not capture this.

Just curious I guess of two things. . . 1) I'd love to know if you have come across any solution. 2) Do you know if this will be fixed in future releases such as Froyo?

I for one cannot believe there is not more shouting about this when I search on the internet. I guess people don't use smart phones for PDA?!?!?! In my mind, a smartphone, if truely smart, will contain everything I need. . . PDA, Map, Internet, Phone, etc. Thought the calendar is fast and sleek, it is a step WAY-BACK because of these two features.

Anyone come up with a solution for this? I would really like to be able to change the alarm notification. Seems pretty stupid that it is not an option.

You could change the file /system/media/notifications/22_on_time.ogg to something louder
I agree that it is poor that the option is missing
