After reading about the massive (450%) performance improvement provided by Froyo, I have to wonder if it will be worth it for HTC/T-Mobile to release an update for the G1. I'm sure it would probably make the phone MUCH quicker...

    Just curious of everyone's opinions...

It would be fantastic news if Google announces a Froyo update for the G1 this week. There have been rumbles in the past that any major update to the G1 would require a complete reinstall (think Apps2SD). This at least indicates HTC and Google were considering it.

Froyo may include Apps2SD functionality and the new kernal with 5 times the speed would be sweet on the G1. I'm still using my G1 and hope it happens. Enough time has passed and lots of new phone models are out there so honestly, I don't think we will see an official Android 2.2 update for the G1.

Yeah I don't think a new update for G1 will be coming anytime soon either to be honest...

As nice as it would be, I don't think Google will spend lots of time on the small fries now all the big boys are on their way.

Im hoping Google will encourage all manufactures to upgrade all legacy devices to at least froyo. Because still being stuck on 1.6 is very depressing. :(

Well to be honest, I'm rooted so I could easily just install a 2.2 ROM if it ever surfaced.

But I'm kind of curious to see just how well the OTA update would work after all their claims and I'm willing to get rid of root just to find out.

If I like it, then I'll keep it. Otherwise, just root my phone again.

I'm on 2.1 on my G1 and it's running fantastically.

Official word at Google I/O was no the G1 will not receive 2.2. Depends how you read that. Does that mean it will get 2.1? Glad I rooted.

A Google rep specifically said that the G1 will not support any more firmware updates after 1.6 because the size of the internal storage isn't enough, or something like that. I highly doubt 2.1 or 2.2 will be seen on the G1 unless you root your phone.

I guess I'll have to root my phone then. Of course that Evo is looking sweet and since T-mobile doesn't have 3G in my town yet I may make that change. Still on the fence though, I really do like my G1.

If nothing else, I'm hoping the G1 gets 2.2 so we can watching the BH2 forums implode. I should probably head out and stock up on microwave popcorn.
