Help wireless internet access

I have just bought my lg escape phone. I have never had a phone with internet, I did have an ipod that would connect which I used but it wasn't a phone.
My problem is this, I only have so much internet time and when I am at home I would like to use my wireless on it occassionally. When I go to settings and am connected to my wireless the phone still uses my air time on my phone account.
How do I make it just use the wireless and not the phone plan time?

There's a free app on Play called Data ON-OFF that will let you turn your phone data on and off at will (and, since it sits on the desktop, it lets you know whether data is turned on or off).

Thank you for the information. Is that the only way to accomplish this? Is there not a setting on the phone itself?
I am new to the smart phone part of this, although the Ipod I had is similar in many ways.
Is there a way to turn off the data thru the settings on the phone myself?
