How do you get the either the word suggestions, spell corrections to work?

I have been into setting > locale & text > and have selected quick fixes, show suggestions and auto-complete under the andriod keyboard and auto-replace under device keyboard... nothing seems to work, do I need to install a dictionary or take some other action to make these things work?

    any help would be apreciated.

where are you trying to get it to work?

They don't work with the hardware keyboard. Not sure why, but they don't.
They also don't work in the search box, I've notice a few other places where they don't work, but I can't remember them.

I know, for sure, they work in Gmail, OI Notepad, and the default messaging app.

From the factory I was able to use the default keyboard and word suggestion (with space added for you) and fly along happily. Somehow my keyboard got switched to XT9 and absolutely will not give me the option of switching back to the original keyboard. I'm about to reset the phone and start over unless someone can help. How do I put a dagger through XT9's miserable heart?

    The worst part...
Now my word suggestions are garbage (e.g. start typing "love" l-o-v and get "log" even in the input window and suggestions are all strange three letter combos--as if I were typing on a phone-numeric keyboard).
