I think someone else did a similar thread, but I thought I would add to the flavor.

I am a moderate phone user and a moderately experienced "geek". Not an expert by any means... just enough knowledge to get me into trouble :D

I have read many threads on rooting the phone and said to myself "Nah... don't use it enough". Besides, sometime... the 2.1 update will be coming.................... sometime.................. soon........................

And with my luck, I would be the one person to set the phone on fire just by trying it.

But yesterday I decided to take the plunge.

I brought up the INSTRUCTION page for Pre-Kitchen in the [Guide] Root/Rom Faq/ Tutorial thread and followed it exactly.

Phone rooted within 15 mins. No hitches. No glitches.

Then I followed the instructions (same page same thread) and installed Fresh 1.1 rom.

Once again, no hitches, no glitches. Another 15 mins or so. DONE.

I didn't notice an overwhelming difference, but there was a noticeable one.

I begin to read further and then said to myself "Let's just go all the way".

So I installed the Gumbo Kernel over the top of Fresh 1.1.

    WOW. VERY noticeable difference.

I begin to read further and then said to myself "Let's finish it".

    SO I installed SetCPU.

    WOW.

    Fast, faster, fastest.

Phone is incredibly quick, smooth, and responsive.

    So here is my advice:

Seriously consider it even if you are just a minimal phone user.

Read read read before you take the plunge.

If you decide to do it here are some tips:

    1. Print out ALL of the instructions
    2. Find yourself a quiet place with no distractions
    3. Follow the instructions to the letter
    4. Take your time

I have done all of this, but it is still a bit sluggish. Side by side to the Nexus One puts our phones to absolute shame.

Heck, even the iPhone PLOWS through tasks waaay faster than our phones with all these tweaks. :(

    I have 3 nephews with I-Phones.

My phone right now is just as fast bringing up apps.

Google Maps: Less than 1 second load and GPS fix.

Are you really expecting a 528 MHZ processor to run the same speed as a 1ghz?

Are you expecting Android 1.5 to run as smooth as 2.1?

    You expectations are severely lacking.

Compare the hero to a second gen iPhone and see which wins.

Rooted with Fresh 1.1 and Gombos kernel my phone easily competes with an iPhone. And I can do other things with it while I stream pandora.

The same steps I went through. My phone is running like a champ. As soon as I pick it up and unlock screen I fly with dolphin browser and other apps. Huge difference that I installed handcent (Didn't before because of some complaints of lag) and the phone is still running like a champ.

Speaking of laggy apps, Better Keyboard is outrageously good now (after setCPU). I can actually take lectures notes on my phone faster than I can write them AND I don't make typing errors (although it will miss a keystroke here and there, it still really needs multitouch). Give it a try if you hate the normal keyboard

and my unrooted phone takes about 2 seconds to do the same thing. Are people really going thru the bother of rooting a phone and flashing the ROM because they cant wait 2 seconds for an app to open? wow

    People like to tinker! :)

For me, a minimal speed boost is only a side benefit. I rooted for the flexibility. Themes, boot screens, wifi-tether, remove sprint apps etc...

Sounds like you haven't played with a rooted phone. I was the same way...at first...but finally I rooted and my phone is so much more versatile. There isn't much you can't do with this phone now.

Okie doke. That was just one example.

Does your "Weather Bug" app spinning logo at the beginning ever stop or hiccup while loading?

Does your phone have to catch up with you while you are dialing?

Does your keyboard have to catch up with you while you are typing?

Are you stuck with the pre-loaded / pre-installed Google / Sprint apps and unable to delete them as you wish?

If you answered yes to any of those.. you have an "un-rooted" phone.

Here is a question I have,

    If I root my Hero.
    Install Fresh 1.1
    Install Gumbo Kernel
    Install SetCPU

Will my Sprint Hero still be able to do flash on websites as it does now?
Will I have to re-install all the programs I have installed now?

Also what will happen when 2.1 comes to the Hero?

    Thanks.

Answer to question one I am not sure of... but I think yes.

Answer to second question is no.

Answer to third question: This will be up to you. You ALWAYS make a backup of your previous settings / system etc., so it is possible to revert back to the STOCK ROM to gain the 2.1. update.

However, as has been noted, after 2.1 comes out, the XDA developers will have an update to reflect changes shortly thereafter.

NOTE: There is some speculation that 2.1 will eliminate the possibility of flashing custom roms.

If this is the case, then you will have to make the decision to stay with custom, or revert back to stock and stay with stock.

That is great! I guess one of the main things that have been holding me back it having to set up my phone all over again.

Well that and I will hurt my phone in some way! (I would hat to go back to a Centro!)

    Thanks!

Decent gaming is absolutely impossible without SetCPU (PapiMissle, Sky Force, some GBA/SNES ROMs, etc.), use of decent keyboards at any moderate level of speed is impossible without custom ROMs/setCPU, (and in some cases even the stock keyboard is too laggy to handle normal typing), switching back and forth to landscape is a tremendous task without SetCPU, and receiving a call will completely shut down your phone for 5-10 seconds while multitasking without ROMs/SetCPU.

Not everyone has the patience of Job, and most people prefer to USE their $600 phone rather than tolerate it, so we do things like make EASY FAST AND SIMPLE modifications to our phones to spruce them up. You would never say any of the stuff you said if you saw the difference it made in a well-used phone, but you'll never have the balls to do something out of the ordinary to your phone to find that out for yourself, will you?

Of course, if you plan on only having 2 or 3 apps for the rest of your life, you probably don't need to worry about gaining extra speed but that isn't the case for most of us.

    ...

On a more friendly note, you seriously should check all of this out. Its so worth the trouble.

    http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/38911-guide-root-rom-faq-tutorial.html

I would definitely read through the entire 3 pages. But the first page is the set-up page.

That should take you through ROOT with Pre-Kitchen and Installation of Fresh 1.1

    This is the Gumbo Kernel

[CDMA KERNEL ROM]Gumbo Kernel beta project + RAM hack - xda-developers

Then the Set CPU app is on the market.

Only slight "problem with my weather app is it takes a few minutes to update when I go into another city.

Nope, the dialer works perfectly fine.

Nope, even when I was on the stock keyboard it was fine.

I have Sprint stuff preloaded of course but it doesnt bother me. I moved it off my home screens and dont even know its there. Here is a video of me playing around with it. I can make one of me using the dialer and keyboard too if you would like, you wont see any lag at all :)

Playing with my HTC Hero on Vimeo

As I said id another thread, if you are in an area like I am with full signal, EVDO and 3G speeds, your phone will run pretty darn good. If you are in an area with 1X and no EVDO or if it bounces between that and 3G, your phone will be laggy as all hell. I got to experience this first hand when I went up to the mountains.

If that's the case, you have THE Htc HERO that everybody wants. I would definitely keep it.
