Swype has been extensively discussed and reviewed in this forum. In my opinion, the program that has improved my android experience more than any other. After a demonstration, my iPod friends get green with envy. It is currently in beta and unfortunately for those that have not signed up, the beta program is currently closed to new registrations (unless something has changed in the last few days since I checked). Hopefully it will be available in a release version soon. My guess is they will charge for it, but whatever the cost, worth every penny.

Uhm...I have a question regarding Swype as well. I downloaded swype via a non-official site (e.g. I'm NOT participating in the beta) , but when I installed and activated it in my keyboard settings menu, it said something about "My Phone, HTC Legend, not having the right resolution for swype".

Am I doomed to using the basic keyboard? :'(

Back in the days of the "unofficial" beta, there were two versions floating around, one for HGVA and one for WGVA. I used the WVGA on my Moto Droid, and my wife needed to use the HVGA on her Droid Eris. So I think the answer to you is "no."

Agreed. I'm running Swype on my Hero with an unofficial 2.1 ROM and it's unbelievable how well it works. It's become number one in the list of apps to 'show off' when I show the phone to other people.

On my Droid I used to have trouble switching from portrait to landscape and vica-versa; Swype always told me I had the wrong resolution but then would proceed to work anyway after I clicked ok. The 5612 apk works a lot better beyond just not having that minor annoyance. The keyboard is getting smarter, in my opinion it is still a bit awkward though in regards to the method of entering the same letter twice in a row...

I use ShapeWriter, it's just like Swype and I love it and it's on the market. Not really sure if there's a big difference, though.

Swype is awesome. It really is one of the most helpful apps that you can get. I totally agree with shrink57 when he said it is the app that has improved the android experience moreso than any other app out there.

since my swype (original leaked version) I have been trying ShaperWriter trial. So far it is not anywhere near what swype was. Swype is way better, even in the limited version I had. Swype will be a "must have" whenever it is available.

I missed the beta. Any idea when it might be available for release? Any Swype Devs on here want to accidently leak some details?

Hopefully the future version runs a lil smoother... I can't say I was very impressed with the "leaked" version. I found the default Eris keyboard easier and faster to use.

I am currently still running Android 1.5 and missed the beta, and after a lot of searching and intalling/uninstalling I managed to find a Swype .apk that was compatible with OS 1.5. I wish I could tell you exactly where I found it, but I know it was from one of the following 3 sites because that is where I download all of my .apks, just be ready to trial-and-error download and be patient, you will eventually stumble across the right one:

    mobilerumor.blogspot.com
    www.filecrop.com
    www.4shared.com

im sure youre as eager to get your hands on this as I was, if you're not familiar with installing apks on your phone let me know.....but let me know either way if you get it on your phone and if you like it, I like knowing that I can provide helpful information, it boosts my android-ego ;) good luck!

I agree, I found it to be laggy at times. But when it ran smooth it was fantastic.
