Great news, the guys over at XDA Developers have reported that finally the X10 has been rooted.

Although it's early days yet it's good to know we can look forward to some tasty roms cooked by the master chefs at XDA instead of waiting for SE to get they're act together.

Seems like our X10's having Froyo is now more than a dream :D.

Im not sure what the term "rooting" means, or why there's such a big fuss about it?

WOOT, and a big congrats to all the peeps that contributed to the effort!

"Rooting" means to obtain root-level access to the operating system.

On Android, you'll notice using a file explorer that you can't access any system files: those that run the base Android operating system. That is because these are protected.

By rooting a phone, the user gains access to the system directory, and can thus manipulate any aspect of the OS. Though this can be dangerous (like having access to the Windows directory on a Windows-based system... you can screw things up if you mess with it without knowing what you're doing), the benefit is that on a rooted phone you can remove apps that come pre-installed (Moxier, Timescape, Mediascape, etc. on the X10), run apps that require system-level access (WiFi tethering, screenshots, etc), and even change the OS itself (like installing Android 2.2 on the X10 before SE releases 2.1 for it).

The big fuss is that rom cookers can give us what SE don't / won't. There'll be a good chance we'll get Froyo on our X10's long before SE even consider it.

Also they'll be a good chance of getting a vanilla rom without Moxier, Timescape, Mediascape etc.

Having previously owned the X1 which i was initially unhappy with (poor ring volume amongst other issues!!!) it wasn't until MrRusch over at XDA cooked his fine roms and made the phone into what it should have been to begin with.

Think I'll pass on SE's software update incase it disables the ability to root and wait for some custom roms :D

Read through the thread mate, the devs said they have to still test it on the mini but they may have tried it by now???

I was up to page 30 on my last view so if your only interested in the mini read on from page 30 if you can't be bothered to read it all :)
