    I hope it's before.

Gotta call Rogers as soon as that pre-order page goes up. Don't technically qualify for an upgrade to an Android phone yet, but was told by retentions that because my iPAQ is failing hard (bad battery) and is out of warranty, they'll qualify me for anything but the iPhone on a new contract.

Stick with the N1. As much as I am stoked for the X10, there's not enough difference between the two to really worry if you've already bought it. You'd likely lose some money if you sold it, and the X10 is amazingly expensive at the moment unless you plan on picking it up on contract.

Thanks for the advice Saltorio. That's what i was thinking as well. Will the X-10 be shipping with 2.1 now or still 1.6 OS??

After all this update drama with the Dream and Magic why would anyone want to lock into another contract or get their phone from a provider? I wish I could pay less per month for not getting a so called subsidized phone but it is still worth it to me to never get locked into another contract ever again. I'd like an N1 but is too much money this year, until next year my non contract Magic is good enough especially with not running the R ROM.

No. X10 is still gonna ship with 1.6. However Sony has stated publicly an upgrade to 2.x will be made available this year.

I'd rather not get locked into another year on my contract, but I can't afford to pay for an un-subsidized phone. Only reason I'm even getting it subsidized is because my iPAQ has decided it no longer wants to hold a charge.

I bought a Magic for $200 and spent a little time putting on the 1.6 ROM. I can't afford a $600 phone either but I won't ever be suckered into a contract phone. If I couldn't afford a non contract phone then I couldn't afford the monthly bills either. I have a phone because I don't have cable tv, sat tv, landline, or anything else from the big boys. Cell is my only vice right now and even that is too costly. But Android is too much fun as long as I don't have to be locked down to the R ROM.

I must admit from the video and reviews i have seen on the X10 leave me feeling confused.

The UI looks hot and looks like fun and i can't wait to play with it and wish i could put it on my phone. The camera is great and facial recognition software seems very cool.

After that though i have some problems with this phone.

I think they have waited way to long to release this phone, they announced back in the fall.

Releasing the phone without 2.0 or 2.1 is just a mistake, from many of the reviews they love the UI but says it runs a bit sluggish.

It is very surprising that no U.S. carrier has jumped on board with this phone also, really makes me wonder why and question the support for this phone in the future. It kind of reminds me of the X1 that came out, with alot of fanfare but fizzled after release.

This is sony's first try at android and it had potential but i think they have taken too much time. This phone could have been one the top phones maby 6 months ago but now with the likes of nexus, droid, desire, legend, galaxy S and evo 4G and more handsets on the way am not sure it be the phone we and sony hoped it would be.

I think it will be a nice phone with some great features but my hopes for the phone have diminished. It will be fun to play with and will be great phone for some people but i think die-hard android phone lovers will be disappointed.

One of the tweets which I read yesterday indicated that Sony is going to release the X10 with 2.1 only for the US launch. I asked @SonyEricssonCA whether or not the same applied to the Canadian launch, but no response yet. :(

After having used N1, I think Sony would be in a much better position to release it with 2.1 rather than 1.6. 2.1 opens up so many new app possibilities and capabilities.

Several videos have showed AT&T branding on the home screen of the X10. As AT&T have messed are messing with the software on all their Android phones (locking them down, preventing non-market installs, etc.) I wouldn't be surprised if this is why there's a delay on the X10 being announced for the U.S.

Depending on how long the delay is gonna be, it's likely Sony expects to have their 2.1 (or 2.2) update available, and thus figure the U.S. launch will simply include it.

With the exception of the OS, and maybe the screen (not being AMOLED), the X10 is still going to be a very competitive phone (spec wise at least) with the best of what's available right now (the Galaxy S and EVO 4G are months away as they were stated as coming in summer, which usually means end of summer). Sony's mistake was announcing the X10 as early as they did. Sony's estimates were Q1, and they're barely missing that in all markets but the U.S. as they start shipping X10s over the next few weeks.

The reviews that are coming in so far about the phone are close to what i said and maby some of my comments swayed by that. Some sites have refused to do a review till the 2.1 update and some are calling the software slow, buggy and laggy.I think the right thing to do is to delay the NA launch till they go 2.1 and fix some bug issues.

The UI on the phone is great but without the 2.1 OS this is just a run of the mill average android phone.Promise of a upgrades are not enough to help with the crucial early sales.Every phone has promises of a 2.1 upgrade but if sony wants to really make a splash with the X10 they need to do it at launch not promises of what come later on.Only get a chance to launch the phone once and they need to do it right first time.

Rogers already has some stock on the x10 in their warehouse so they will likely be launching it soon.

Actually, Gizmodo is the only site that has refused to do a review as you mentioned, so saying "some sites" is a bit misleading. There are plenty of reviews out already, which can be found in summary below:

    Xperia X10 Review Roundup #1
    Xperia X10 Review Roundup #2

The Xperia X10 has a capacitive screen. so multi-touch is possible on these types of screens.. just wait for 2.1. if you look at how Capacitive screens work, you would know that multi touch is just a software issue.. when someone puts a 2nd finger on the screen it is always picked up just at lower input levels.. then the software has to map this.

Same thing with the HTC magic. people said multi-touch would not work and well it did if your rooted your phone and upgraded your rom. or when rogers did the update.. there was Multi-touch.. same capacitive screen technology.

Well, this really bites! And quite frankly I'm shocked at Sony. I wasn't going to get the X10 but I had a few frieends just waiting for it on Rogers. I guess they'll go either Milestone or N1 after hearing this.

You don't want to be caught out in the cold when new apps start coming that take advantage of multitouch capabilities.

Really? It is a Sony afterall. Two lessons I've learned over the years: I'll never buy a Sony product again and I'll never get *any* phone from a cell provider. Doing both is certain to be a frustrating experience in corporate lunacy.

I'm not saying that Sony isn't capable or doesn't have some good designers but their corporate philosophy lacks way too much to ever get me as a customer. Rogers, well, is Rogers and needs no introduction. However they are more tolerable if treated as just an ISP. Last night on my unlocked, non contract Android I was getting 6+M/1M speeds and that is excellent. Needing to briefly tether my laptop I could have forgotten that I wasn't on a regular internet connection.

Later in the year it should get very interesting with devices. Sony, bleh.

Hey wondering if anyone is going to go to the the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Sneak Peek Event on April 12 in Toronto?

I got this email from Rogers:
I sent a reply 2 hours after the email was sent but have not heard back from them :( I might have been too slow >_<

Yes, I will be there. In fact yesterday at the Toronto Android User Group meeting we got a sneak peek of the X10 from Sony Ericsson. Got to play around with the device. Although the devices we played with were not running commercial version of the software, they were quite good.

I personally (biased opinion it may be) was impressed with the MediaScape and TimeScape, though the face recognition failed miserably and the speed and responsiveness was nowhere close to the nexus one.

Ya I got in invite but I can't go as i'm working 12 hours on Monday the 12th.. I don't understand why they don't have these things on the weekend. most people in the real world work on weekdays.. events like this should be on the weekend.

Yeah, I mentioned the same thing to a Rogers rep via Twitter. She agreed, and said she'd pass the comment on (for what it's worth).
