...Just got my long awaited Desire, here in the USA. US Cellular CDMA Desire Version.

When I playback a video the picture quality is terrible. The movements lag, big time. With being new I have a couple of question, as to why this is happening or is it normal?

    1. Do I need a different software (app) for playback of videos?
    2. Do I need to download some sort of pluggin?
    3. Is it because, I don't have Froyo 2.2 yet?

As most of you have had the HTC Desire for sometime, as we just got them in the USA; I was hoping someone could chime in and help me.

Thanks in advance for the help...

I didn't try playing any videos (apart from YouTube videos, which were fine) before installing 2.2, but with 2.2 they're absolutely fine. What is the codec, resolution etc. of the videos you're trying to play?

If videos need transcoding, I use this: -

    http://dcunningham.net/media-tools/encodehd/

It has a preset for the Desire which works well.

follow this link if you looking for encoding of video (credit goes to pigbrother ):
    Video encoding settings?Please help! :) - xda-developers
quoute: "I'm using AVS Video Converter now and my files works flawlessly. The settings are H.264 baseline@L3.1, 720p resolution (or native WVGA, as you like it), up to 8000kbps (without any problem for Desire) bitrate, no CABAC, MP4 ISO v2 container. Handbrake lacks some advanced settings, maybe you should try to change it."
and then scroll down where this guy is giving setting screenshots.

beend using 720p video encodings at 8mb/s bitrate and 29 fps for quite a while from 1080p source and all videos are smooth and look stunning. so sorry but no lag :)
just your post is confusing as there is little information on what video you're referring to (camera, dvd, 1080p, streaming?). make it more clear so we could help you.

Ok, what I mean is just YouTube videos. That's all I've tried to play so far. Extreme lagging or trailing; I'm not quite sure what you call it. Hope that helps a bit.

    Thanks all.

Are you using a 3g connection?

Tried on both Wifi and 3G, same outcome. I was just looking at movie trailers on YouTube.

If your talking about videos which you transferred in, use RockPlayer, trust me, you'll love it :)

If your talking about Youtube videos, they play fine on my desire (froyo), with no lag at all.

Youtube videos even in HD play smooth on my Desire with no added software, if you are lagging then the most probable cause is
    1. you do not have enough unused memory left in the phone to be used for buffering

    or

    2. your internet connection is too slow for video streaming.

Totally agree with this and to add if the videos are loaded to your SD card, if the video has a high resolution say 720p it'll be the fact your card isn't being read quick enough which could be a fault with the card or the phone there is an app for checking the speed called: SD Card Spped Test.

    Hi 4wall,

this lag thing is something that has been bugging me for ages... and I am hoping that Froyo (the Android 2.2 OS upgrade) will help. My video quality though is brilliant.

For me the problems are with video stored on the SD card, rather than youtube playback. I have an original, branded class 6, 16gb card so quality / speed of that card is not an issue.

I think the problem is that you need to be VERY specific about the encoding. I used the program suggested by Fried (thanks!) with mixed results, but for the most part it did a really good job and I recommend using that to convert any videos you have. I converted some 1080p video down to WVGA and it worked great.

I do hope this intolerance is fixed.... it's really annoying...and a phone this powerful shouldn't have such a shameful limitation. But, as I have learned in the Android world, things don't get fixed quickly by Google.

Having said that, don't let it put you off the phone... it's an amazing piece of kit...!.

This is slightly off-topic, as you are new I highly recommend the following add-ons...

    1. BatteryTime Lite - manage and display your batter life
    2. Advanced Task Killer Free - use the settings to autokill apps to ensure free memory, smooth operation, and thus optimum battery life
    3. Meridian - paid-for version - music & video player.
    4. Apps Organizer - profile icons into groups (i.e. use a single icon to open a group of icons) - save loads of space on your desktop
    5. JetVD-YouTube great for ripping videos & MP3s from youtube if that's your thing

No lag here, rooted still on vanilla 2.1 (Telus) and played Youtube and some Family Guy wmv's, no lag yet. Is it a 2.2 thing?

Hi guys, great site and newbie poster here. Just got a Desire HD so new to Android.

However I'm not new to video encoding. I am hearing 8000kbps which is high for a video this size. I have got great results using handbrake at 500-750kbps.

Whilst it could be the card, the kbps would need a faster read from the card, class 6 will do 60mbps but the phone has to work less hard with a smaller rate.

Anyway, feel free to flame but just a thought.
