Default SD Card needed to root ?

Are SD Cards really needed to root?I know that any thing other then downloading apps or music for the phone an SD card is needed. But rooting need a SD card?Reason I ask is because I was attempting to root my thunder bolt this evening and it told me that I needed an SD to move on any further.

you should be able to do it without an sd card, provided you use a recovery that allows flashing from internal storage.

what method are you following?
