I started with the new ones (9th Doctor) but have seen a decent amount of the older ones. I hope to watch all of them at some point, but it can be hard to get my hands on some of them.
Definitely! Tom Baker was the best. When Telewest cable first started up one of the channels (UK Gold maybe) used to have the complete Dr Who and Blake's Seven on rotation. Happy Days!
I only saw it twice, but I'll never forget Tom Baker and The Master at Raselon's tower/tomb. Fan-tastic.
And when in the modern series, that whole arc revealed the machinations of Raselon, I was besides myself - now that was great Who!

Yep, without scouring down and buying them, they're very hard to come by.
Really gripes me, I'd gladly like to pull up one of the oldies once in a while on the web and just watch, and I'd be ok with commercials to support the effort.
Until last year, you could watch the entire Babylon 5 series on the web at slashcontrol.com - they got popular, went into DVD and got pulled from the web. It's one of my other favorite series but after seeing it several times, no, I don't want to collect the DVDs and have them acquire dust.
Some stuff, you just want to enjoy as television.
For the longest time here in the US, the only way we could watch The Doctor was on our public broadcast system (our educational TV network). I started donating to PBS strictly because of Doctor Who. Now we get them on BBCAmerica and that's ok, but in my case, I keep seeing the ads for BBCA HD - but still can't get it.
Anyway - the modern series had consistency blown me away, starting with Eccleston (a fine actor). In him, the Doctor's rage really shows thru. Didn't expect to like Tennant, but quickly found his take on the Doctor to be really excellent.
This latest Matt guy - Smith - is just another Sylvester McCoy in my book.
Then again - when I was getting my mind blown by Tom Baker and they were showing little specials during the PBS fundraisers, all of the person-on-the-street interviews in the UK had everyone saying that Baker was ok and Pertwee was the Real Deal.
They used to say that your first Doctor will always be your favorite and for the longest time with Baker, that was hands-down true. Now, I put Eccleston and Tennant in his class, so I guess that you just never know about these things.
I think your favourite Doctor is the one you watch when you're a certain age. Tom Baker took over when I was about 8 or 9 and stayed in the role into my mid teens, so for me he's the definitive doctor. Jon Pertwee was a tough act to follow though.
Unfortunately after Tom Baker it just kept going down hill until towards the end of Sylvester McCoy's stint. Not counting the very last episode, which looked like a poor excuse to recycle costumes from Cats, I thought the Sylvester McCoy episodes featuring Ace were some of the best since the Tom Baker days. But then just as the series was picking up again it got cancelled.
The revival has done the series proud though. Blink is one of the best Dr Who stories ever, easily up there with older classics like The Green Death, Genesis of the Daleks, Pyramids of Mars, Logopolis...

Huge Who fan as well! I'm a younger guy so I started with Tennant, but Matt Smith and Jon Pertwee are by and far my favorites. August seems like forever away to wait for new episodes. I am pretty jazzed up that the budget finally matches the ambition of the show.
I would love to see Baker and that part of the series that dealt with The Guardian.
I think you can rent most of the classic Who's from lovefilm.com. I don't have any on DVD myself. We do have the Babylon 5 box set though - brilliant series.

Amen to that, no more wobbly sets and endless abandoned quarrys. Now they've given the big budget treatment to Dr Who, I hope the beeb will honour its other classic sci-fi series, Blake's Seven. If you just took the core story it would make a great mini-series or TV movie.

In the modern series, Rose was the most intriguing, but I liked Martha quite a bit for her wits. Couldn't stand Donna, but thought her gramps was tops.

I have to agree with Early, Eccleston and Tennant are the tops for me. Tennant continued the anger Eccleston brought in a some what different vein and pulled it off quite well.

I love it. I first discovered it on my PBS station around 03/04 and the first Doctor for me was Pertwee. Then it moved to Tom Baker and I kept up on it when I could which wasn't easy when it came on late Saturday nights and being kinda young didn't help matters. Then I started watching the new series when it came back and have been watching ever since. If it was possible i'd buy every episode ever but unfortunately it isn't that easy so I try to see em where I can
Big Doctor Who fan. I've only seen the new series, but it's probably my favorite current show. I've watched it 3 or 4 times now. I need to figure out how to get my hands on some of the original series. Hopefully it will be better than the original Battlestar Galacitica
It is. Significantly so....remember the effects and monster costumes are poo. The original really shines through in the writing and acting. I'd recommend finding some old Tom Baker episodes, that's how I started. Try YouTube, I know you can find episodes posted in segments.
Does anyone know when Doctor Who is returning? I remember watching a few of the old episodes as a kid. I think the first Doctor I saw was Tom Baker. I had no idea about the Doctor's regeneration. So the next time I saw it there was a different Doctor and I was totally lost. Then when they started the new series, I understood how things worked. I really like the show.
Can confirm Autumn return in the UK, though I don't know a definite date. "Christmas Special" will be mid season, which would mean late Autumn if they ran continuously up to Christmas, but I suspect they will start earlier and have a short break before the special.

I was never interested in that when it aired, and it wasn't until roughly 6 months ago that I moved in with my sweety and we watched the entire series (he has the boxed set also). I so fell in love with all of the characters, especially Londo Mollari!
As for Doctor Who... huge fan since they renewed the series. I love Matt Smith, but omg I miss David Tennant (he's soooo hawt) and Rose Tyler like crazy. Those two were my favorite!
been watching dr who for years (nearly 40 ) jon pertwee had not long taken over the role.. yes im that old!! looking forward to the new series in the autumn..
