Default What was your favorite horror film as a kid?

What movie got you going as a kid?

Mine was The Last Man on Earth (1964) - IMDb . Vincent Price was a classic!! This movie is why I enjoy Zombie movies/shows. The classic horror films were simplistic and enjoyable IMO. Even the comedy horror films.

P.S. I love Halloween and all the gory movies!!

Trying to list just one scary movie is like trying to eat just one gummy bear. Simply cannot be done!

1973 Don't Be Afraid of the Dark
1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre
1975 Trilogy of Terror (Amelia)
1984 Nightmare on Elm Street
1986 Alien
1987 Predator
1987 Hellraiser

Edit Movies I cannot watch; zombie movies or movies with dolls that come to life. I have two exceptions: Army of Darkness (awesome series!) and The Puppet Master (loved those!).

As a kid, probably the first Friday the 13th. Lots of killing and boobies I wasn't old enough to be looking at lol. And of course, Jason jumping out of the water at the end!

Tarantula. Probably my favorite as a kid since it was the 1st one I remember seeing.

Hmm... The most scariest horror movie I've ever seen and my fave too is "The Ring"
I saw it first time when I was in junior high school (before that I never see any).
It's Japanese movie and it has sequel from 1-4. Even now they remake it again with different stories but still using the same ghost.

These two scared me more than any other horror movies back then. Had to watch them with the lights turned on...

The Wolf Man (1941) - IMDb

Horror of Dracula (1958) - IMDb

I am to the point where I root for Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers. The characters in those movies do such stupid things I think they all need to die.

I was never allowed to watch horror movies at home as a kid. I did watch some at a friend's house though. We watched the House series and The Shining (which I really love) and quite a few others that don't stick in my head except An American Werewolf In London. I love it still to this day and when ever my kids go out for a walk or something I tell them to stay off the moors.

As I got into my teen years I finally got to see horror movies in the theater (The Final Nightmare, People Under The Stairs, Wolf, Child's Play 2, Hellraiser). Then my later years in high school I watched lots of horror movies, mostly B rate stuff (Evil Dead and Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn, Dead Alive, Reanimator, Bride of Reanimator).

My favorite mainstream horror movie would have to be Hellraiser or The Final Nightmare (Alice Cooper was a good choice for Freddy's father).

B-Rate Comedy/Horror is Dead Alive/Braindead or Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn

I also really like both House of 1000 Corpses or The Devil's Rejects but many people don't consider them to be horror movies.

My favorite scary movie is still the original Halloween (you can't kill the boogeyman), but I do remember having frightful nightmares after seeing the Exorcist.
Wait.... maybe that was just because of the date I was on at the time.
Yah... that one didn't work out.

The evening news.

I was a kid during the bloodiest part of the Vietnam War, and it was covered in "living color" on all three TV networks. And yes, it was shot on film back then.

My scariest movie as kid was Evil Dead. Another one I can remember was Blob. The Blob (1988) - IMDb . Looks funny these days but scared shit out of me at young age.

They filmed the scene from the first Blob at a diner I used to eat at in Downingtown, PA I think the food was scarier than the movie.

Ok, I will date myself

The Fly 1958
House On Haunted Hill 1959
House of Usher 1960
Psycho 1960
Pit and the Pendulum 1961
Premature Burial 1962
The Day of the Triffids 1962
Whatever Happened To Baby Jane 1962

Those are the movies that bothered me the most as a kid. I was between six and ten years old at the time. I think that's likely the most impressionable age and I was certainly taken in and completely bothered/entertained by them. There have been some great movies in the horror genre since I was little. None that effected me quite like the ones when I was a kid.

When I was a kid (maybe 8?) I popped in Arachnophobia when my parents weren't around. Big mistake. That movie scared the bejesus out of me. Spiders still scare the crap out of me til this day.

I got one: "The Candy Man" true story of Dean Corll and two cronies that lured and killed over 25 local boys during the 1970s... some missing still not solved to this day.

I love Horror movies and at one point during the 80s when a friend worked in a video rental store, we would get one out every night and watch it. We went through hundreds of movies during one summer holidays.

I became jaded pretty quick but I do remember the earliest thing that scared me as a young child was a late 1970s episode of Tom Baker's Doctor Who called Horror of Fang Rock.

I used to collect banned movies and had uncut 'banned' copies of Evil Dead, Cannibal Holocaust, Driller Killer, I Spit on Your Grave, House on the Edge of the Park, Cannibal Ferox, Nightmares in a Damaged Brain and quite a few others too. This was way before the internet and they were all on video cassette. I had to hide them from my father, who was a cop. Ah, those were the days.

Hands down, Arachnophobia.

I'm still afraid of spiders.

It looks like a comedy now. But back then, "Night of the Living Dead" scared the heck out of me!

I saw this movie when I was about 9 or 10. It scared the crap out of me. I couldn't sleep for a couple of nights. Watching it now, it's actually pretty mild...compared to similar movies now.
