Keep in mind that I don't know how to root it yet.
Likely there's already a solution but I haven't managed to find one because flashing the rom with the off-line flasher made easy to replace the official recovery with the custom one.
Ok, update i've looked in to the installer, looks like the spreadstrum baseband is not included.
BTW according to the images size I'm able to understand what's the recovery image.
It's the file called G:\Program Files\ZTE\DL_U960_CMCC_CHN_EU\version\RF.ZTE so should be sufficient to replace it with the custom recovery image (recovery.img) to have the phone flashed and rootable.
Checked with adb root => adb is already running as root

Volume + and power are not working for me
if i use adb reboot recovery phone screen gets black => G3 screen => battery charging screen (phone still connected via USB cable but no more available with win-Explorer)
I did this with HUAWEI U8860 and when i do the same with this phone screen turns pink on the phone (i have to press vol +and- and power on when charging with USB) and i see a connected drive in win-explorer containing one folder "image" holding files amss.mbn, boot.img, cust.img, EMMCBOOT.MBN and recovery.img
Can i flash the recovery.img using adb push <local file> /image/recovery.img?

there's a script file in the custom recovery folder, just connect the phone double click on it, after that your recovery should be flashed and you should be able to use it, as described above.

I now tried to flash solutors B13 rom (renamed to update.zip) via settings/about/System updates but no luck again. It starts, reboots the phone into recovery mode (why is this working from here and not if i try to do it manually?), then i do get a screen with statements:
finding update package...
opening update package...

E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Rebooting...
And i end up with my old chinese rom which i want to replace...
download the recovery from the link below, and then unzip them to a clean foloder and then click on reco.bat to start installation of your recovery. u960 recovery.zip - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download
after this install only catthy 62 rom (U960+MOD+2B03+v1.5.0+ib_Catty)
and then your u960 work well.

I tried to update through that OneClick-File now but am not able to get it runnning. Maybe my Chinese is too bad
I think that the key is to first install the usb driver which you find under the Win32Driver folder inside the Installation directory...
If you have join me installed the driver step can be skipped.
Anyway I decided to edit this thread to make it easier to read, and more newbie friendly.
To have the phone updated you need:
A working XP32 machine and the drivers installed (either from join me sw or the ones included on the 02b08 one click updater package)
Then :
#1 Download, decompress and install the 02b08 one click updater (archive's PW is zte_u960)
[if you need them, the older 02b06 and 02b07 versions are still available for download]
#2 replace the file RF.ZTE with the one I've uploaded here
the file location is usually C:\Program Files\ZTE\DL_U960_CMCC_CHN_EU\version\) but the location could be slightly different depending on Windows' language and drive installation.
#2b If you want the adb support in recovery you can use the newer Catty's recovery, download it here (rename recovery.img as RF.ZTE then follow the step #2 instructions)
#3 Start the update process using the previously installed updater
#4 If the process went trough correctly (dial *983*154# to check your actual version) and the phone rebooted correctly, you can turn it off and reboot it in recovery mode (turn it ON keeping the power button and Volume UP depressed) and apply the update package I prepared to get the phone rooted and gapps installed in one step.
#5 you can (optionally) flash one of the modded/overclocked 2b08 kernels i pubblished here
#5b alternatively you can flash also one of Catty's mod kernels to get the 1.4Ghz overclock and init.d function (see the linked post), are based on the old 2b06 rom, but should work w/o any problem on 02b07 and 02b08.
Is better to wipe the phone after this step to avoid market problems.
#6 If, after the flashing process, the USB function of the phone doesn't work as expected (E.g., no USB storage available), you may need to use the set mode utility to switch it back to its original behavior. (select the option on the left and confirm with the button on the left)
#6b You can get the same effect dialing *983*87274# and then selecting the first option (thanks to nothingman76, who spotted this info)
[Edit 15/05/2012]
replaced the root + gapps market package that had some problems with the market with the V2 (root + gapps/playstore), if you have already downloaded it, please redownload and reaply the update.
I can't see any problem using the OC kernel on the older rom, BTW is better to understand why the v1.5.1 isn't working for you.
I do have the same behaviour that scooterfips describes in post #235. I am able to flash Cattys ROM 1.5.0 but not 1.5.1.
Now to better understand why this happens: How can I contribute to figure out??? If you tell me what you need from my end i will support this as far as i can.
scooterfips will be reading frequently here and in the german forum i will keep him informed about our success.
You could start to post a screenshot of the result of
*983*154# (mask the serial numbers)
to see if we can see any obvious differences.
The Solutor,
I have been able to update the baseband using a Win XP laptop. I have tried to flash 1.5.1 but still get the issue with the "white noise" screen (or mash of pixels screen) when booting. What's weird is that it looks like the phone still works (you heard sounds of booting, you can plug the USB and see connection to the computer), just the screen is fuked-up. Remember that I have been able to flash 1.5.1 by replacing the data/boot.img from Cathy's ROM 1.5.0.
See below the details of my phone:
Software version: ZTE U960 2B03 MOD Cathy V1.5.1/ZTE U960 2B03 MOD Cathy V1.5.1
U960SPV1.0.2B03/ZTE_U960_V1.0.2B03
Hardware Version: ts6c
Flash Type: Hynix/H8BCS0QE0MMR-4EM-C
Screen Type: 0x03

Reason: Removed IMEI and SN
I've uploaded my new kernel 2B06 here with 386Mb of ram, init.d support and overclock to 1.4GHz.
and the version without overclock with 390Mb of ram here ...
Try to use it on your own risk and hazard ... as always it is ...
Hi Catty,
in order to user your kernel do I need to first install the 2B06 using the zte upgrade tool and then apply your update from the recovery ?
I'm currently using your rom 1.5.1 with the overclock and I didn't manage to run the zte oneclick upgrade tool. (I attach the phone and when a press the start button the phone simply reboot...)
I'd installed new FW, thanks to Solutor for support . The main for me - USSD work in SIM1. And sadly that Volume - is not wake up the phone . Now will try to flash Catty's kernels.

if you are using a virtual machine you need to reconnect the usb device tothe virtual machine, whenever it disconnects.

You can use it in any rom, just keep in mind the annoing behavior with the market, so is easier to use it on a freshly upgraded phone, wiping it again after the kernel upgrade.

Thanx for the answer... I will retry.
Sorry for the dumb question... but if I install the latest katty's kernel over 1.5.1 I do not get the latest rom 2B06 release from ZTE correct ?
If I want to have an uptodated phone I should installa both the ROM with the one-click-install and then katty's kernel?

If you update just the kernel you will end with the kernel updated, that's all

Can you explain what is to do for working USSD?
I buyed allready rooted device and have now catty 1.5.1 rom
with Baseband fix 2b03. What i have to do for working USSD on SIM1?
Thanks ahead!

Exactly.
Now I managed to install the ROM with the oneclick tool and the phone is running with the new (almost) chinese ROM! But now with setmode tool cannot see my phone and for this reason I cannot continue to install google apps and the new kernel...
Any suggestion ?

I've updated the relevant post to have all what you need in one place.

Thanx a lot
you can download them directly on the phone, so not an huge problem.
btw try to turn off the phone plug it on the usb and then turn it on, pay attention to connect the usb device to the virtual machine quickly (it may change during the boot, so you may need to do it more than one time).
You can also use it on win 7 (even 64bit) XP is not mandatory for the utility

Now I've fixed the usb problem by entering the code *983*87274# and selecting the first option. Now I can mount the device and I can also see the device with adb. It seams to me that the recovery is not working even if I've renamed the file as you suggested probably beacause at the and of the update process the phone didn't reboot normally and I had to remove the battery... Now I try to install the recovery...
You can't install the recovery on a non rooted phone
Sorry I'm dumb... Recovery is working with "adb reboot recovery" and now I'm installing the google apps! Probably I didn't type correctly "power + vol+"...

Hi Catty,
I saw the new splash screen with the cat... nice
I've installed the overclocked version but it seems that it doesn't have the /system/etc/inid.d foder and for this reason the v6 script doesn't ask me about init.d integration. How can I enable init.d support ?
OneClick Updater dows not like my computers I have here. Actually I don'T get this tool running as it will not recognize my phone. Tried with Win7 32bit and XP in a virtual box.
This is what I do:
- Install oneclick-Tool
- install driver in the package
- turn off and unplug phone.
- Plug in phone
- wait for driver installation
- unplug and turn off phone again.
- start the updater tool
- plugin phone
From there on nothing happens. Phone will go into malshenzu charging state. If I start phone it will start regulary without starting the update process.
So did I missed something? It's a pitty not to get this tool working as I really need the 2B06. SIM1 is still not working for my simcards of o2 :/
Hello Solutor,
I've done the oneclick update with the RF.ZTE replaced. It goes to the process without error.

Are you sure the new RF.ZTE is enought to install recovery on a new nonrooted phone?

I also have the same problem and I think the vol up + Power does not work: (tried many times ...)
I put the phone in recovery mode from the android sdk by using "adb reboot recovery". I think I can also install some recovery app from the market...

I guest this has something to do with windows installation, try to get a clean real XP machine.
