USCC requiring tethering package with GS3

I just upgraded from a mesmerize to a GS3 and now they want me to buy a tethering plan? Is there any way around this? It's complete b.s. that upgrading phones requires me to buy something that I have used for free for over 2 years.

I have been using Fox Fi for now, I just can't update to JB. If I have to pay for tethering I will go to VZW. If I am going to get raped I might was well get 4G for my troubles.

Is there any way for them to detect tethering if you are rooted? Or just when you're not? I have an unlimited data plan and I plan to work some awake overnights at the group home I work at. We have no use able wifi over here and I was planning to tether to play games or whatever on my laptop while there.
